Toyota Fortuner EXR

Highlights

• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• 220 mm ground clearance
• 80-litre fuel tank capacity

Summary

This GCC-spec SUV offers the ideal entry point for families seeking Toyota's legendary reliability without the premium price tag of higher trims. With 42,000 km on the clock, this vehicle has been driven well below the regional annual average, making it a mechanically fresh choice for its next owner. The grey exterior is a practical, high-resale choice for the local market, resisting the visible effects of desert dust better than darker tones. In a segment where durability is king, this model outlasts rivals through its shared Hilux-platform DNA and simplified mechanicals. For a GCC buyer, the peace of mind provided by the massive local service infrastructure is the single most important factor for long-term ownership.

This Car vs Other 2022 Fortuners

At 42,000 km, this vehicle’s mileage is significantly lower than the typical 60,000–75,000 km seen on average used 2022 SUVs in the GCC. The grey exterior is highly favored in the local market for its heat-reflective properties and strong resale demand. Choosing a low-mileage, GCC-spec example ensures the engine and cooling systems have not been over-stressed by the region's demanding climate.

EXR vs Lower Trims

The EXR serves as the essential 4x4 entry, providing the full part-time four-wheel-drive system with high and low range that defines the model's capability. Unlike base two-wheel-drive variants, this trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels and cruise control as standard, which are vital for long-distance highway comfort between Emirates. It balances utility with modern needs, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and rear parking sensors.

Fortuner vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Mitsubishi Pajero, this model offers a more modern 6-speed automatic transmission and superior fuel efficiency for daily commuting. Its body-on-frame construction provides a more rugged foundation for desert driving than unibody crossovers like the Nissan X-Trail. The 80-litre fuel tank ensures fewer stops during cross-border drives compared to many competitors in the mid-size SUV class.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.7L engine averages around 10.4 km/L, offering a balanced profile for GCC stop-start traffic and highway cruising. Service intervals are recommended every 5,000 km to 10,000 km, with a widespread network of authorized centers across the UAE, KSA, and Oman ensuring affordable maintenance. Toyota maintains one of the highest value retention rates in the GCC, typically depreciating only 8-10% annually compared to 12-18% for European rivals.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp engine is paired with a genuine part-time 4WD system, making it highly capable for weekend desert excursions and sandy terrain. With 220 mm of ground clearance, it easily clears obstacles that would stop road-biased crossovers. While the 0-100 km/h time is approximately 12 seconds, the focus is on low-end durability and steady performance under the extreme heat of the Gulf summer.

Comfort & Cabin

This seven-seater features a versatile cabin layout with a dual air conditioning system specifically designed to reach the third row, a necessity for UAE summers. The fabric seats are durable and stay cooler than leather under direct sunlight, while the cabin is equipped with six speakers for clear audio throughout the interior. It is an ideal setup for large families who require a reliable daily driver that can transition into a weekend adventure vehicle.

Safety

Standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPMS), which are essential for maintaining control on sandy or gravel-strewn roads. The EXR trim provides dual front airbags and a driver’s knee airbag, alongside ISOFIX child seat anchors for family security. ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) ensures consistent stopping power during fast-moving highway traffic common on the E11 and E311.

The bottom line

For the practical family buyer or desert enthusiast, this low-mileage EXR provides the perfect balance of rugged 4x4 capability and Toyota’s unmatched regional support.
