Hyundai Santa Fe GL SMART

Highlights

• Seven seats with flat-folding rear rows
• 8.1 L/100km official combined fuel economy
• Extensive GCC authorised service network

Summary

This 2023 Santa Fe GL Smart is a highly practical family choice, offering a seven-seat configuration that is rare for its footprint. In the GCC market, the black exterior remains a resilient choice for resale value, especially when paired with the popular 2.5L Smartstream engine. With mileage at 78,000 km, it sits slightly above the local average for a one-year-old vehicle, but its mechanical simplicity and front-wheel-drive layout ensure lower long-term maintenance costs. As a GCC-spec model, it is fully optimized for the region’s extreme heat, featuring an air conditioning system specifically designed for rapid cabin cooling. This specific listing represents a smart middle-ground between the base workhorse trims and the high-maintenance luxury variants.

This Car vs Other 2023 Santa Fes

While many Santa Fe models in the region are strictly five-seaters, this GL Smart trim offers the expanded seven-seat layout, making it a stronger prospect for growing families. The 78,000 km mileage reflects consistent highway use, which is typical for residents commuting between Emirates, often resulting in less engine wear than low-mileage city cars. The black paintwork is a staple in the UAE and Saudi markets, ensuring a faster turnaround time when it eventually returns to the used market.

GL SMART vs Lower Trims

The GL Smart adds essential convenience features over the base GL, including the proximity key with push-button start and a larger 8-inch touchscreen interface with wireless smartphone integration. It also upgrades the cabin with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and rear parking sensors, which are vital for navigating tight mall parking spaces. Unlike the base fleet-focused trims, the Smart trim includes stylish LED daytime running lights and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Santa Fe vs Segment Rivals

The Santa Fe leads rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V by offering a genuine third row of seating, allowing it to compete with larger SUVs while maintaining easier city maneuverability. Its 67-litre fuel tank provides a superior cruising range for long desert highway stretches compared to the smaller tanks found in many compact crossovers. Furthermore, Hyundai’s infotainment logic is widely regarded as more user-friendly than the systems in contemporary Nissan competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption averages roughly 8.1 L/100km on open highways, though this will rise to approximately 11.5 L/100km in heavy stop-start traffic in Dubai or Riyadh. Service intervals are set at 10,000 km, and with one of the most widespread authorised service networks across the GCC, parts are affordable and readily available even in smaller towns. The Santa Fe typically retains about 70-75% of its value after three years in the local market, benefiting from Hyundai’s strong reputation for reliability.

Performance & Capability

The 2.5L Smartstream engine produces a smooth 180 hp, providing adequate power for highway overtaking and fully-loaded family trips. Its front-wheel-drive configuration is tuned for efficiency and road comfort, featuring selectable drive modes that adjust steering weight and throttle response. While not intended for deep sand, the 176 mm ground clearance is perfectly suited for gravel tracks, wadi access, and high city curbs.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is designed for the GCC climate, featuring dedicated rear AC vents that ensure all three rows remain cool during the peak summer months. The cabin insulation is impressive, effectively muting wind noise during high-speed highway cruising between Emirates. Practicality is a highlight, with a flat-folding second and third row that expands cargo space to over 600 litres when the extra seats aren't required.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on this trim includes a comprehensive airbag system, Electronic Stability Control, and Hill-start Assist Control, which is particularly useful on inclined parking ramps. The GL Smart also features a high-definition rear-view monitor with dynamic guidelines to assist in safe reversing. These systems provide peace of mind for family duty, ensuring the vehicle meets modern safety standards for both city and highway travel.

The bottom line

For the GCC buyer seeking a late-model, seven-seat SUV that balances running costs with modern tech, this GCC-spec Santa Fe is an exceptionally logical choice. It is a reliable, high-utility workhorse that avoids the high price tag of a brand-new model while offering the safety and comfort essential for regional driving.
