Highlights

• 7.7 L/100km combined fuel efficiency
• 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This 2023 Hyundai Sonata in the Smart trim offers a sophisticated balance of modern tech and daily practicality for the GCC commuter. While it carries a Korean specification, it features the reliable 2.5L engine and a high-resolution 10.25-inch infotainment display typically found in mid-to-high trims. The sleek black exterior is a perennial favorite for resale in the region, and with 75,000 km, this car is well-positioned for its age given the long highway distances common in the Emirates. It stands out in the sedan segment for its bold design and generous cabin space, providing a premium feel without the luxury price tag. For a buyer looking for a late-model sedan that prioritizes efficiency and connectivity, this Sonata is a compelling choice.

This Car vs Other 2023 Sonatas

With 75,000 km on the odometer, this Sonata has been driven roughly 37,500 km per year, which is slightly above the GCC average of 25,000 km but typical for commuters traveling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The black exterior is one of the most sought-after colors in the UAE, ensuring it stays relevant and holds its appeal at resale. As a 2023 model, it benefits from the latest aesthetic updates of the 8th generation before the 2024 facelift.

Smart vs Lower Trims

The Smart trim serves as a significant upgrade over the base SE, most notably replacing the standard 8-inch screen with a larger 10.25-inch high-resolution touchscreen featuring integrated navigation. Buyers also benefit from added convenience features like a wireless smartphone charging pad and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, which are highly valued in the local market. It bridges the gap between the entry-level workhorse and the premium Limited trim, offering the most essential tech upgrades.

Sonata vs Segment Rivals

The Sonata is frequently cross-shopped with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. It leads the segment in terms of standard technology for the price, offering a more futuristic digital interface than the base Camry. For long GCC highway drives, the Sonata’s 70-liter fuel tank provides a substantial range, reducing the frequency of petrol station stops compared to some smaller-capacity rivals.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.5L MPI engine is tuned for efficiency, achieving approximately 7.7 L/100km on combined cycles, though stop-start city traffic in places like Riyadh or Dubai may see this rise. Hyundai maintains an extensive authorized service network across all GCC countries, including Juma Al Majid in the UAE and Wallan in Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts are always accessible. While Korean specs may see a slightly faster initial depreciation than GCC-spec units, the Sonata’s overall popularity in the region ensures a liquid market for future resale.

Performance & Capability

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces a reliable 180 horsepower, providing smooth acceleration for highway overtaking and city merging. Power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission that is optimized for fuel economy rather than aggressive shifts, making for a quiet and composed cabin at cruising speeds. While not a sports sedan, its front-wheel-drive setup offers predictable handling and stability on both wet tarmac and sandy coastal roads.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the Sonata offers a spacious five-seat layout with ample legroom for rear passengers, making it a favorite for family use. The air conditioning system is designed to handle high ambient temperatures, and the Smart trim includes dedicated rear air vents to keep all passengers cool during the peak of summer. The cabin is well-insulated from exterior road noise, providing a refined environment for long-distance drives across the Emirates.

Safety

This trim comes equipped with a suite of essential safety features, including multiple airbags and Electronic Stability Control. It also features Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, which are particularly helpful for maintaining safety on fast-moving multi-lane highways. The rearview monitor with dynamic guidelines makes parking in tight urban spaces straightforward and safe.

The bottom line

This Sonata is the perfect match for a budget-conscious professional or small family who wants a modern, tech-forward sedan that is ready for the high-mileage demands of the GCC.
