• 453 litres boot space behind the third row

Summary

This three-year-old Toyota Highlander GXR offers a balanced mix of family practicality and fuel efficiency that is highly prized in the UAE market. With mileage that reflects typical GCC highway use, it remains a reliable choice for long-distance travel between emirates. The hybrid system is particularly effective in GCC city traffic, where fuel savings are most noticeable during peak-hour congestion. As an American spec model in a popular blue finish, it provides a cost-effective alternative to local dealer units while maintaining the core durability Toyota is known for. The seven-seat layout and GXR features make it a versatile workhorse for active families across the region.

This Car vs Other 2023 Highlanders

With 50,659 km on the odometer, this vehicle's mileage is average for a car of this age in the GCC, where 20,000–25,000 km per year is the standard for family SUVs. The blue exterior is a distinctive choice that stands out from the sea of white and silver typical in the UAE, while still maintaining respectable resale appeal. Being an American spec vehicle, it offers a lower entry price compared to GCC-spec equivalents, though buyers should ensure local software and radio frequency compatibility.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim sits above the base LE, adding key features that enhance the daily driving experience in the Gulf climate. It typically upgrades the interior with more durable seating materials and provides a larger touchscreen interface for easier navigation. Crucially for family use, the GXR often includes power-adjustable seating and an upgraded climate control system to ensure consistent cooling across all three rows during the peak summer months.

Highlander vs Segment Rivals

When compared to rivals like the Honda Pilot or Mazda CX-9, the Highlander leads in fuel efficiency thanks to its hybrid powertrain, making it the preferred choice for eco-conscious families. It offers a more compact footprint than the Pilot, which translates to easier parking in tight Dubai or Riyadh malls without sacrificing the necessary seven-seat capacity. Its reputation for mechanical longevity gives it a significant advantage in long-term value retention over American or European competitors in the same segment.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.5L hybrid system achieves approximately 6.7 L/100km, offering massive savings for high-mileage drivers compared to V6 alternatives. Toyota enjoys the most extensive authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring that parts are readily available even for American spec models. While American spec vehicles generally depreciate faster than GCC spec units, the Highlander's badge ensures it retains a higher percentage of its value at the 3-year mark than almost any other non-GCC rival.

Performance & Capability

Delivering 240 hp, the Highlander provides smooth and linear power delivery, perfect for merging onto fast-moving UAE highways. The front-wheel-drive configuration is optimized for road efficiency, providing a comfortable and stable ride for cross-border trips or school runs. While not intended for deep sand, its generous ground clearance is more than sufficient for gravel tracks and weekend camping spots in the Northern Emirates.

Comfort & Cabin

The seven-seat cabin is designed with GCC family life in mind, featuring dedicated air conditioning vents for the rear passengers to combat extreme heat. The interior provides 453 litres of cargo space even with the third row in use, expanding significantly to accommodate large grocery runs or holiday luggage. Acoustic insulation helps keep the cabin quiet, providing a refined environment for long highway drives between the major cities of the GCC.

Safety

This Highlander comes equipped with a comprehensive safety suite, including advanced collision avoidance and lane-keeping assistance that is invaluable on busy multi-lane highways. Standard features often include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which provide extra confidence during lane changes in fast-moving traffic. Multiple airbags and a rigid chassis design ensure high levels of protection for all seven occupants, meeting stringent international safety standards.

The bottom line

This 2023 Highlander GXR is a smart choice for the budget-conscious family buyer who wants Toyota's legendary hybrid efficiency without the premium price of a local GCC spec unit.
