Volkswagen Amarok STYLE

Highlights

• 3,500 kg braked towing capacity
• 800 mm wading depth
• 12-inch digital cockpit and touchscreen

Summary

This 2023 Amarok Style represents a massive leap forward for the model, combining German refinement with a rugged platform shared with the latest Ford Ranger. With under 45,000 km, this GCC-spec example is just entering its prime, offering a significant saving over new while remaining well within its ideal service window for the region. The grey exterior is a highly practical choice for the Middle East, masking dust well and holding strong resale value compared to niche colors. Powered by the potent 2.3L turbocharged engine delivering 297 hp, it offers a smoother, more car-like drive than its diesel counterparts, making it the perfect dual-purpose vehicle for Dubai's highways and weekend desert escapes. For a GCC buyer, the combination of Volkswagen’s premium interior and a robust, locally supported service network makes this a standout choice in the mid-size segment.

This Car vs Other 2023 Amaroks

With 44,620 km, this vehicle sits at the expected average for a GCC workhorse, where long-distance commutes between Emirates often result in higher annual mileage than international norms. The grey finish is one of the most resilient colors for local conditions, significantly aiding resale value by resisting the harsh sun and visible sand accumulation better than black or darker shades.

Style vs Lower Trims

The Style trim is a major upgrade over the base Life model, adding critical luxury and tech features that GCC buyers value, such as the massive 12-inch vertical infotainment screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. It also introduces Matrix LED headlights for superior night visibility on unlit desert roads and an Area View 360-degree camera system that makes parking this large pickup effortless.

Amarok vs Segment Rivals

While rivals like the Toyota Hilux prioritize utility, the Amarok leads in cabin technology and refinement, offering an interior that feels more like a premium SUV than a truck. Its 2.3L petrol engine provides 297 hp, outclassing the naturally aspirated four-cylinders found in competitors and ensuring confident overtaking on the E11.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for this 2.3L turbo engine typically averages around 9.9 L/100km, though stop-start traffic in Riyadh or Dubai can see this rise. Service intervals are standardized at 15,000 km or 12 months, with Volkswagen's extensive authorized network across the UAE and KSA ensuring parts availability. The Amarok holds its value well in the GCC, particularly in GCC spec, which avoids the warranty and cooling concerns associated with North American imports.

Performance & Capability

The 297 hp output paired with 452 Nm of torque allows for a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, making it capable of hauling heavy trailers or boat setups. With a wading depth of 800 mm and 235 mm of ground clearance, it is well-equipped for off-road excursions. The 10-speed automatic transmission ensures the engine stays in its power band for both fuel efficiency on the highway and torque delivery on soft sand.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is a highlight of the Style trim, featuring dual-zone automatic climate control that is essential for the 45°C summer peaks. The five-seat layout provides improved rear legroom over the previous generation, and the 12-inch touchscreen supports wireless App-Connect for seamless navigation. Ambient lighting and premium upholstery create a refined environment that isolates passengers from road noise and heat.

Safety

The 2023 Amarok carries a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and comes equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite including Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist, which are invaluable for long desert highway drives. Standard safety hardware includes eight airbags, autonomous emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera, providing a level of protection rarely found in the pickup segment.

The bottom line

For the buyer who needs a rugged pickup but doesn't want to sacrifice the luxury of a premium SUV, this low-mileage, GCC-spec Amarok Style is the smartest choice in the current market.
