Fiat Fullback

Introduction

The Fiat Fullback, introduced in 2016, was a mid-size pickup truck developed in partnership with Mitsubishi, based on the L200/Triton platform. Designed for global markets including Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, it combined Fiat’s commercial vehicle experience with Mitsubishi’s proven pickup engineering. Available in single cab and double cab versions, the Fullback offered versatility for both work and leisure. Production ended in 2019, but it remains a capable and practical pickup in the used market.

Exterior

The Fullback featured a muscular and rugged design, with a bold front grille, swept-back headlights, and a strong shoulder line. Its high ground clearance and flared wheel arches emphasized durability and off-road readiness. The double cab version added sporty details such as alloy wheels, chrome accents, and side steps. Practical features like a spacious cargo bed and sturdy bumpers reinforced its identity as a workhorse with modern styling.

Interior

Inside, the Fiat Fullback balanced utility with comfort. The cabin offered seating for up to five passengers in the double cab version, with supportive seats and durable materials designed for heavy use. The dashboard was functional, with easy-to-reach controls and clear instrumentation. Higher trims added leather upholstery, touchscreen infotainment, and climate control, making it suitable for both business use and family travel.

Safety Features

The Fullback was equipped with a solid range of safety systems, including ABS with electronic brake distribution, traction control, and multiple airbags. Stability control and hill-start assist were available in higher trims. Reinforced body construction and advanced braking systems enhanced passive and active safety. Though not as advanced as newer pickups, it provided competitive safety standards for its class.

Engine Trims

The Fiat Fullback shared its engines with the Mitsubishi L200, offering 2.4-liter turbodiesel engines in different power outputs. Depending on the market, outputs ranged from 150 hp to 180 hp, paired with six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions. Both rear-wheel-drive and selectable four-wheel-drive versions were available, giving it strong versatility for on-road and off-road use.

Maintenance

Thanks to its Mitsubishi origins, the Fullback benefited from proven mechanical reliability. Regular servicing of the diesel engine, including oil changes and turbo care, was essential for longevity. Spare parts were widely available due to platform sharing with the L200. Overall, it was considered cost-effective to maintain for a pickup, with durability suitable for both commercial fleets and private owners.

Competitors

The Fiat Fullback competed with the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Navara. The Hilux was known for legendary toughness, the Ranger for technology and comfort, and the Navara for efficiency and handling. Fiat positioned the Fullback as a practical and affordable alternative, leveraging Mitsubishi’s engineering while appealing to markets seeking value without sacrificing capability.
