BMW aimed to create a performance version of its luxury X5 mid-size SUV, drawing inspiration from the M division, a brand that has produced several successful performance versions over the years. Adding to the lineup of high-performance models is the M50i variant, positioned as the top-of-the-line version in the X5 M lineup.
Exterior Design
BMW’s M versions are renowned for their aggressive looks and sharp lines, providing a sporty stance. Despite being an SUV, the BMW X5 M50i boasts a chiselled front end, incorporating signature elements such as the iconic kidney grille and the distinctive double-barrel LED DRLs.
Moving to the side, it features large 22-inch alloy wheels and continues to feature the sport and angular body lines. Finally, the rear profile of the M50i continues the sporty character with the dual-exhaust tips.
Interiors
As a luxury SUV, BMW has given the X5 M a complete leather and brushed aluminium treatment. It strikes a balance between sporty and luxury appeal. However, the scales tip towards the sporty side with features like contrast stitching, paddle shifters, and a large chunky steering wheel. On the other hand, a flat-bottom design on the steering wheel is something we would have wished for.
Technology
The BMW X5 M50i comes well equipped for the price, featuring two 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment. Additionally, it incorporates the brand’s latest BMW iDrive system, providing AI assistance to help customize the car according to the driver’s preferences.

Engine & Transmission
A 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine powers the BMW X5 M50i, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This powertrain produces 523hp and 750Nm of torque. This allows the performance SUV to complete the 0 to 100 km/h run in just 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h.
Driving Impressions
As it is a performance SUV, BMW has equipped the X5 M50i with M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential. It also features an Adaptive M suspension, allowing the SUV to seamlessly transition from a firm, sporty ride to a more comfortable one.
Additionally, the responsive and precise quick steering provides a satisfyingly hefty feel. The eight-speed automatic transmission seamlessly complements its operation further.
The braking system is equally impressive, effortlessly bringing the vehicle to a stop with composure. Despite minimal body roll, the SUV’s substantial weight is perceptible, giving the driver a tangible sense of the vehicle’s mass.
Safety
The BMW X5 M50i, as standard, offers driver assistance features that actively keep occupants safe during unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, it includes an ample number of airbags and other passive safety equipment.
