BYD UAE & Al-Futtaim Showcase Megawatt Flash Charging Technology

BYD, in partnership with Al-Futtaim, has unveiled its new Megawatt Flash Charging technology in the UAE. The system promises to transform electric mobility by tackling one of the biggest challenges for EV owners—charging time.

The introduction supports the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and marks a significant step toward accelerating the country’s transition to sustainable transport. This comes shortly after the much-anticipated launch of the BYD Shark 6 — the UAE’s first plug-in hybrid pickup truck

What Makes BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charging Different?

BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charging system is designed to eliminate “charging anxiety” by offering speeds that match petrol refuelling. The company says drivers will be able to add 400 km of range in just five minutes, equivalent to “two kilometres for every second of charging.”

This development could reshape perceptions of EV practicality in the UAE. “With BYD Megawatt Flash Charging stations, we offer our customers the same speed as filling gas,” said Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD.

The breakthrough is powered by BYD’s Flash Charging Battery and a 1000V high-voltage architecture, allowing for charging currents of up to 1000A and a charging rate of 10C—both global firsts for mass-produced EVs.

How Will This Support UAE’s Sustainability Goals?

Al-Futtaim, BYD’s partner in the UAE, stressed the technology’s role in driving sustainable mobility across the country. Lucas Bellieud, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility, said:

“This breakthrough makes charging as quick as refuelling a gasoline car, eliminating one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. It enhances the EV ownership experience while directly supporting the UAE’s environmental goals.”

The Megawatt Flash Charging system also comes with the world’s first all-liquid-cooled charging terminal, capable of delivering up to 1360kW. This ensures reliability and efficiency for large-scale deployment in the Emirates.

When Will UAE Drivers Experience This Technology?

Details on the official rollout date, charging station locations, and compatible BYD models will be revealed in the coming months. For now, the announcement signals a major leap forward in making EV ownership more convenient for residents and businesses in the UAE.
