Honda MRV EX

• 205 mm unladen ground clearance
• 73-litre fuel tank standard

Summary

This Honda MRV EX is a quintessential family workhorse, known globally as the Honda Pilot and revered in the GCC for its bulletproof reliability. At 21 years old with 237,000 km, its mileage sits below the local annual average for a vehicle of this generation, suggesting it hasn't been subjected to the constant long-distance cross-border hauls typical of many older SUVs. The classic white exterior is the most sought-after resale color in the region, offering the best heat reflection and long-term value retention. As the higher EX trim, it delivers a more refined cabin experience than the base model, making it a robust choice for families needing dependable transport. For a buyer in the Emirates, this represents one of the most mechanically straightforward and easy-to-service 7-seaters on the market today.

This Car vs Other 2005 MRVs

With 237,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has averaged roughly 11,000 km per year, which is significantly lower than the GCC standard of 20,000–25,000 km. While many MRVs of this era have exceeded the 350,000 km mark, this example remains in a more manageable mileage bracket. The white paint is a strategic advantage for GCC buyers, aiding in cabin temperature management and ensuring a faster sale when it's time to upgrade.

EX vs Lower Trims

The EX trim elevates the MRV experience with functional upgrades that were highly prized in 2005, including 16-inch alloy wheels and body-colored exterior moldings that replace the basic black plastic of the LXi. Inside, the EX typically adds a power sunroof and upgraded seat materials, alongside cruise control and steering-wheel-mounted audio buttons. These features make the EX feel substantially less 'utilitarian' than the base trim, providing a more car-like environment for daily school runs or commutes.

MRV vs Segment Rivals

When compared to the Toyota Prado or Ford Explorer of the same era, the Honda MRV stands out for its monocoque construction, which provides superior on-road handling and ride comfort. While the Prado offers more extreme off-road hardware, the MRV's 3.5L V6 provides smoother highway acceleration and a more cavernous, flexible interior for seven passengers. Its lower center of gravity makes it a safer and more stable choice for high-speed highway driving between emirates.

Running Costs & Resale

Honda's 3.5L V6 is famously reliable but thirsty in stop-start city traffic, though its revised fourth and fifth gear ratios for 2005 help maintain efficiency on the highway. Maintenance is straightforward, with a massive network of authorized service centers and independent Honda specialists across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Parts availability remains excellent even for this generation, keeping long-term ownership costs predictable. Historically, the MRV/Pilot holds its value better than American rivals like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, typically depreciating at a slower rate due to its reputation for reaching very high mileages.

Performance & Capability

The 240 hp V6 engine produces a healthy 328 Nm of torque, ensuring the MRV never feels underpowered even with a full load of seven passengers. While it lacks a low-range transfer case for heavy dune bashing, its 205 mm ground clearance and VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management) system are perfectly suited for gravel tracks, wadi drives, and sandy weekend getaways. The five-speed automatic uses Grade Logic Control to prevent gear hunting, which is particularly useful when climbing mountain passes like Jebel Jais.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed around family logistics, featuring a flat floor that creates a spacious feel for all three rows. The EX trim's air conditioning system is legendary for its ability to handle 45 degree summer heat, with dedicated rear vents to ensure second and third-row passengers stay cool. Practical touches abound, including a second-row activity tray and a boot capacity that remains usable even with the third row in place, though folding the seats flat reveals a massive cargo area for household moves or camping gear.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the GCC-spec EX includes dual front-impact and side-impact airbags, alongside a sophisticated Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The 2005 model year also features Honda’s Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), providing crucial traction control during sudden maneuvers on sandy or wet road surfaces. Its unit-body construction includes front and rear crush zones designed to protect the cabin, a segment-leading approach for its time.

The bottom line

Perfect for a growing family or a budget-conscious buyer who prioritizes mechanical reliability over modern screens, this low-mileage EX remains a gold standard for practical SUV ownership in the Middle East.
