Summary

This GCC-spec Toyota FJ Cruiser is a robust choice for buyers seeking legendary reliability and genuine off-road capability in the local market. While its maroon exterior offers a distinctive look, it is the body-on-frame durability and the proven 4.0L V6 powertrain that make this a staple on UAE roads and desert trails alike. This specific model features the sought-after All Wheel Drive system and automatic transmission, balancing city driveability with weekend adventure readiness. For a GCC owner, the accessibility of parts and the vast network of authorized service centers ensure that even a higher-mileage example remains a practical, long-term asset.

This Car vs Other 2008 FJ Cruisers

With a mileage of 332,650 km, this FJ Cruiser reflects the high-utilization typical of long-distance highway commutes across the GCC. While higher than the regional average, these engines are famously over-engineered for such distances, and the GCC specification ensures the cooling system is optimized for extreme summer temperatures. The maroon color is a unique alternative to the more common white and silver, retaining a dedicated following in the local secondary market.

TOP vs Lower Trims

The TOP trim elevates the FJ Cruiser experience by adding key hardware and convenience features that GCC buyers value, such as the rear differential lock and A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) for superior sand performance. It also typically includes the premium 9-speaker audio system with a subwoofer and a multi-information display featuring a compass, inclinometer, and external temperature gauge. These additions make it significantly more capable in the desert compared to base 2WD or standard 4WD versions.

FJ Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

Compared to rivals like the Jeep Wrangler or Nissan Xterra, the FJ Cruiser leads with its exceptional resale value retention and the refinement of its 4.0L V6 engine on the highway. Its 72-liter fuel tank is well-suited for cross-emirate drives, and the Toyota service footprint across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman is unmatched by American or boutique off-road competitors. The unique suicide-style rear doors provide a wider pillarless opening for gear loading that competitors cannot match.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for this 4.0L V6 averages approximately 13.8 L/100km in stop-start city traffic, improving to around 11.2 L/100km during steady highway cruising between cities. Service intervals are typically every 5,000 km to 10,000 km, and maintenance remains affordable due to the abundance of genuine parts across the GCC. The FJ Cruiser is a standout for value retention, often depreciating at a significantly slower rate than European luxury SUVs in the same age bracket.

Performance & Capability

The 240 hp V6 provides a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 7.8 seconds, offering plenty of torque for overtaking on fast-moving highways like the E11. With 244 mm of ground clearance and a dedicated low-range transfer case, it is engineered for the challenging dunes of Liwa and the rocky wadis of Hatta. The body-on-frame construction ensures the vehicle remains rigid and durable even after years of off-road excursions.

Comfort & Cabin

The 5-seat cabin is designed for durability with water-resistant upholstery and heavy-duty rubber floor mats, perfect for handling sand after a beach or desert trip. The air conditioning system is specifically tuned for the GCC climate, providing rapid cooling even when ambient temperatures exceed 45°C. While retro in design, the cabin remains ergonomic with large dials that are easy to operate, ensuring comfort during long hauls across the desert.

Safety

Standard safety features on this trim include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control, which are vital for maintaining composure on loose sand and gravel. The 2008 model year benefited from the inclusion of front seat-mounted side airbags and roll-sensing side curtain airbags for both rows as standard equipment. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) provide reliable stopping power during high-speed highway driving.

The bottom line

For the enthusiast looking for a bulletproof desert companion or a distinctive daily driver, this FJ Cruiser offers a proven mechanical pedigree that is increasingly rare to find in such an iconic form.
