Highlights

• 290 hp from a 3.5-litre V6
• Selectable terrain modes
• Seven seats with all-wheel drive

Summary

This 2014 Ford Explorer XLT offers a compelling balance of family utility and highway performance, perfectly suited for the GCC's long-distance driving culture. With its 12 years of age, the 170,000 km mileage is actually lower than the regional average for this segment, suggesting a more conservative ownership history. The silver exterior is a top-tier resale choice in the UAE, effectively managing heat and maintaining its aesthetic value better than darker shades. As a GCC-spec model, it features the necessary cooling and filtration systems required for reliable operation in extreme summer temperatures. This trim provides the essential tech and safety upgrades that make it a standout choice for those needing a robust seven-seater without the luxury price tag.

This Car vs Other 2014 Explorers

While many SUVs of this age in the GCC often exceed 200,000 km due to frequent inter-emirate travel, this Explorer sits at a respectable 170,000 km, placing it below the typical regional usage for a 12-year-old vehicle. The silver paintwork is a significant advantage in the local market, as it is one of the most sought-after colors for resale and offers the best thermal properties for the desert climate.

XLT vs Lower Trims

The XLT trim is a significant step up from the base model, introducing standard 18-inch aluminum wheels and rear parking assist sensors that are crucial for navigating tight city parking. Inside, it adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and the SYNC connectivity system, providing the essential tech integration GCC buyers expect, along with a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat for improved long-haul comfort.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

Compared to rivals like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, the Explorer stands out with its more sophisticated Terrain Management System, allowing drivers to optimize the all-wheel-drive performance for sand or gravel. Its 70-litre fuel tank provides ample range for long desert highway stretches, while the American-engineered cabin offers a wider footprint that translates to superior shoulder room for all seven passengers.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.5L V6 is a staple powertrain in the region, ensuring that spare parts are widely available and affordable across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Real-world fuel consumption typically averages around 11.2 L/100km, which is competitive for a heavy seven-seater AWD crossover in GCC traffic conditions. Ford's extensive authorized service network, managed by major distributors like Al Tayer and Al Jazirah, ensures professional maintenance is never far away, supporting a steady depreciation curve compared to less common American rivals.

Performance & Capability

With 290 horsepower and 346 Nm of torque, this Explorer provides confident overtaking power on fast-moving highways like the E11. The intelligent AWD system features a rotary dial for selectable terrain modes, specifically tuned to handle the loose surfaces often encountered on weekend family trips to the outskirts. It offers a braked towing capacity of up to 2,268 kg (5,000 lbs) when properly equipped, making it capable of hauling jet skis or small trailers for outdoor adventures.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for large families, featuring a flexible three-row layout that comfortably accommodates seven people. For the GCC climate, the multi-zone climate control includes dedicated rear vents to ensure passengers in the second and third rows remain cool during peak summer. Acoustic glass and reinforced insulation help keep the interior quiet, shielding occupants from both the desert heat and highway wind noise.

Safety

Safety is a priority with the AdvanceTrac system and Roll Stability Control standard, providing essential intervention on slippery or sandy surfaces. The XLT trim includes rear parking sensors and a comprehensive airbag suite, while the sturdy unibody construction earned high marks in NHTSA crash testing. These features provide peace of mind for families navigating the high-speed traffic environments common across the GCC.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Explorer XLT is the ideal match for a family looking for a dependable, silver-colored seven-seater that has been driven less than the regional average for its age.
