Summary

This GCC-spec Limited trim offers a high-value entry into the seven-seater SUV market, combining Ford's dependable 3.5L V6 with an upscale interior that includes leather and advanced tech. With 198,000 km, it has been driven approximately 16,500 km per year, which is well below the typical GCC average, suggesting it hasn't been over-extended on long regional hauls. The Blue exterior is a smart, neutral choice that holds its appeal better than niche colors in the UAE used market. As the top-tier trim for its year, it provides a level of refinement that makes it a more comfortable family cruiser than the base models. It stands out in the segment for its car-like handling and premium cabin features that were ahead of their time.

This Car vs Other 2012 Explorers

At 198,000 km, this vehicle has averaged significantly fewer kilometers annually than the 20,000–25,000 km standard for many UAE-based family SUVs. This lower-than-average usage often translates to better-preserved interior materials and less wear on the suspension. The GCC specification is a critical advantage here, ensuring the cooling system and air conditioning are optimized for the extreme summer heat found across the region.

LIMITED vs Lower Trims

The Limited trim is a significant step up from the XLT, introducing luxury features that are highly valued in the GCC market, such as perforated leather-trimmed seats with heating and ventilation. It also standardizes the Sony premium audio system and the MyFord Touch interface, providing a more modern tech experience. You also get 20-inch wheels and Intelligent Access with push-button start, which were premium options for this model year.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer leads rivals like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander in terms of on-road refinement and cabin technology for the 2012 era. While the Pilot offers a more utilitarian interior, the Explorer Limited feels more like a premium crossover with its softer-touch materials and quieter cabin insulation. Its All-Wheel Drive system and Terrain Management allow it to handle light sand and gravel trails more confidently than many road-biased competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 12-13 L/100km, which is competitive for a heavy seven-seat SUV in GCC stop-start traffic. Ford has one of the most extensive authorized service networks across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring parts are readily available and affordable. The Limited trim tends to retain its value better than base models in the used market because GCC buyers prioritize high-spec features and leather interiors.

Performance & Capability

The 290 hp V6 engine provides smooth, linear power that makes highway overtaking effortless, even with a full load of seven passengers. With a verified towing capacity of up to 2,268 kg when properly equipped, it is capable of hauling small boats or trailers for weekend getaways. The Terrain Management System allows you to switch between Mud, Sand, and Snow modes, adapting the throttle and traction control for diverse GCC landscapes.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for long-distance family comfort, featuring a genuinely usable third row and dedicated rear climate control to keep all passengers cool during peak summer. The Limited trim's acoustic glass and heavy insulation provide a remarkably quiet environment, shielding the interior from wind noise during high-speed desert highway drives. Flat-folding rear seats allow for a massive cargo area of up to 2,285 litres, making it ideal for large grocery runs or camping trips.

Safety

This Limited trim comes equipped with a comprehensive safety suite including electronic stability control and roll stability control, which are vital for maintaining composure on sandy or uneven surfaces. It features a full array of airbags, including side-curtain protection for all three rows, and includes a rearview camera as standard to assist with parking in tight urban spaces. The SOS Post-Crash Alert System provides additional peace of mind for families traveling long distances.

The bottom line

For a buyer seeking a well-featured, GCC-spec family SUV that balances premium comfort with a lower-than-average mileage for its age, this Limited trim Explorer is a highly practical and upscale choice.
