Toyota Prado EXR Toyota Prado EXR 4 cylinder, model:2016

Highlights

• 2,500 kg braked towing capacity
• 215 mm standard ground clearance
• Extensive GCC authorised service network

Summary

This GCC-spec SUV remains one of the most resilient financial hedges in the Middle East, offering legendary reliability paired with the region's preferred silver exterior for heat management. While the mileage reflects typical highway use for a vehicle of this age, the bulletproof 2.7L engine is purpose-built to handle high-kilometer lifespans with minimal maintenance costs. The EXR trim provides the essential off-road hardware needed for weekend desert excursions without the added weight and complexity of higher-tier electronics. For the GCC buyer, this represents a practical entry point into the world of genuine 4x4 capability with class-leading resale value.

This Car vs Other 2016 Prados

At 209,000 km, this vehicle sits at the average annual mileage mark for a GCC-based Prado, where highway-heavy commutes between emirates are standard. Unlike American or Japanese imports, this GCC-spec example features the heavy-duty cooling systems and air conditioning units specifically engineered for the Gulf’s 50°C summers. The silver paint is a strategic choice for this market, known for both its superior heat reflection and its status as a top-three resale color across the region.

EXR vs Lower Trims

The EXR trim serves as the essential gateway to genuine off-roading, adding a refrigerator (cool box) in the center console which is a high-priority feature for long desert drives. It upgrades the cabin with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and integrated cruise control for highway comfort, while retaining the durable fabric seating that stays significantly cooler than leather during peak summer months. Unlike basic utility trims, the EXR also features the 6-speed automatic transmission introduced specifically for this model year.

Prado vs Segment Rivals

While rivals like the Mitsubishi Pajero offer similar seating, the Prado leads the segment in long-term durability and the sheer density of its service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Its 2,500 kg braked towing capacity makes it a more versatile workhorse for regional camping trips compared to unibody crossovers. The full-time all-wheel-drive system provides a more stable highway experience than the part-time systems found in some competing light trucks.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.7L powertrain is optimized for 95-octane fuel and is remarkably inexpensive to maintain, with service intervals every 10,000 km at any Toyota authorized center across the GCC. Real-world fuel consumption averages 12.5 L/100km, which is efficient for a body-on-frame 4x4 in regional stop-start traffic. Historically, the Prado depreciates at just 8–10% annually in the UAE, outperforming almost all European and American competitors in value retention at the 3-year mark.

Performance & Capability

With 215 mm of ground clearance and a dedicated low-range transfer case, this SUV is a genuine off-roader capable of navigating soft sand and rocky wadis. The 160 hp output is delivered through a robust 6-speed automatic that was a major mechanical upgrade for 2016, providing smoother gear transitions during high-speed highway overtaking. Its body-on-frame construction ensures the chassis remains rigid even when towing loads up to 2,500 kg across border crossings.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is configured for seven passengers, featuring a high-output air conditioning system with dedicated rear cooling vents to ensure all three rows remain comfortable in extreme heat. A factory-fitted cool box in the center console provides chilled storage for drinks, a vital luxury for cross-emirate trips. The interior is insulated against road noise and heat, while the flat-folding rear seats allow for a flexible cargo area reaching up to 1,934 liters of total space.

Safety

This Prado is equipped with the core Toyota safety suite including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC), and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Standard airbags protect the driver and front passenger, while the body structure is engineered with side-impact beams to handle both city traffic and rugged off-road environments. The inclusion of Hill Start Assist Control provides added confidence when navigating steep dunes or parking on inclined urban ramps.

The bottom line

This is a prime opportunity for a family or enthusiast looking for a reliable, GCC-spec 4x4 that will hold its value better than almost any other vehicle on the road today.
