Mercedes Benz GLS500 STANDARD

Highlights

• 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds
• 455 hp from a 4.7-litre biturbo V8
• 100-litre fuel tank capacity

Summary

This 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS500 is a standout choice in the GCC used market, offering a high-output V8 powertrain that bridges the gap between the standard V6 models and the high-maintenance AMG variants. With low mileage for its age relative to the GCC average of 25,000 km per year, it presents a long-term ownership advantage for families and executives alike. The black exterior is a premier resale color in the region, ensuring strong value retention when it's time to upgrade. As a GCC-spec model, it is purpose-built to handle extreme summer heat with a robust cooling system and factory-optimized air conditioning. For the serious buyer, this GLS500 combines the practicality of seven seats with the refined performance essential for long highway hauls between emirates.

This Car vs Other 2018 GLS500s

With just 63,716 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven significantly less than the typical 120,000–150,000 km expected for a six-year-old SUV in the GCC. The black-on-black color combination is the most sought-after configuration in the UAE, directly supporting higher resale prices compared to niche colors. Being a genuine GCC-spec vehicle, it retains full service compatibility and high trust levels compared to imported American or European models.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

The GLS500 is a significant leap over the GLS450, replacing the V6 with a 4.7-litre biturbo V8 that offers nearly 100 extra horsepower. This trim levels up the standard equipment to include 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, soft-close doors, and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) which is often optional on lower variants. Inside, you benefit from upgraded multicontour seats with massage functions and a 3-zone climate control system, features specifically designed to improve comfort during long, hot GCC summer drives.

GLS500 vs Segment Rivals

The GLS500 leads competitors like the BMW X7 and Lexus LX570 in terms of second and third-row legroom, making it a more 'adult-friendly' seven-seater. While the Lexus LX uses a truck-based chassis, the Mercedes unibody construction provides superior on-road handling and a quieter cabin at high highway speeds. Its 100-litre fuel tank is specifically advantageous for cross-border GCC road trips, offering a cruising range that often exceeds its German rivals.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption averages approximately 11.3 L/100km, though expect higher figures in heavy stop-start city traffic in Dubai or Riyadh. Service intervals are recommended every 10,000 km or 12 months, and the Mercedes-Benz authorized service network is extensive across all GCC nations, ensuring easy access to parts. While European luxury SUVs typically depreciate by 12–18% annually in this market, the GLS500's status as a V8 flagship helps it retain a premium over the high-volume V6 models.

Performance & Capability

The 455 hp V8 engine delivers a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds, providing effortless overtaking power on the E11 and other fast GCC highways. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system works in tandem with AIRMATIC air suspension to maintain a level ride even when fully loaded with seven passengers. While primarily road-biased, the DYNAMIC SELECT system includes modes that adjust the ride height and traction for sandy tracks and light desert terrain common during weekend excursions.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is a true three-row environment with a power-folding third row that makes configuration changes seamless. GCC-critical features include ventilated front seats and a powerful 3-zone climate control system with dedicated rear vents to ensure all seven passengers stay cool in 45°C+ temperatures. Acoustic glass and high-grade insulation minimize road noise, creating a serene environment for family road trips.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on this trim is comprehensive, featuring the Pre-Safe system which prepares the cabin for a collision, and Active Brake Assist to mitigate city traffic accidents. For the high-speed multi-lane highways of the GCC, the standard Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist provide essential peace of mind. The vehicle is also equipped with a 360° camera system, making it much easier to park this large SUV in tight urban spaces.

The bottom line

For the GCC buyer who needs a true luxury seven-seater without sacrificing V8 performance, this low-mileage, black GLS500 is a rare find that perfectly balances status with regional practicality.
