Summary

This 2021 Honda Pilot EX-L is a standout family SUV for the GCC market, offering a high-spec cabin and a refined V6 powertrain that balances school runs with long-distance highway comfort. The grey exterior is a highly desirable resale color in the region, ensuring better value retention than bolder hues. With seating for eight and a tri-zone climate system, it is purpose-built for large families navigating the summer heat. This specific model provides the ideal middle ground in the Pilot lineup, adding premium leather and acoustic glass without the higher maintenance costs of the 20-inch wheels found on top trims. For the buyer who needs a reliable Japanese workhorse with more personality than a minivan, this Pilot is a savvy choice.

This Car vs Other 2021 Pilots

With just over 91,000 km, this Pilot sits below the typical GCC annual average of 25,000 km, indicating a vehicle that hasn't been subjected to the high-mileage cross-border commutes common in the region. The Modern Steel Grey finish is a major advantage for local resale, as it resists the visible effects of dust and heat better than darker tones. It represents a well-preserved example of Honda's most versatile family platform.

EX-L vs Lower Trims

The EX-L trim is the first in the range to introduce genuine leather-trimmed seating and a power-adjustable front passenger seat, moving the Pilot into the premium SUV category. It adds essential GCC comforts including integrated second-row sunshades and an acoustic windshield to significantly reduce road noise on high-speed motorways. You also benefit from a power liftgate and driver's seat memory, features missing on the base EX and LX trims.

Pilot vs Segment Rivals

The Honda Pilot leads rivals like the Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder in interior packaging, offering a more usable third row for eight passengers. Its 3.5-litre V6 is naturally aspirated, avoiding the complexity of the turbocharged engines appearing in newer competitors, which is a significant reliability factor in extreme desert heat. The 73-litre fuel tank ensures fewer stops during long drives between the Emirates.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel economy typically averages around 11.0 L/100km combined, which is competitive for a six-cylinder SUV in GCC stop-start traffic. Honda's extensive Al Futtaim and regional service network ensures parts are readily available and maintenance is straightforward at 10,000 km intervals. Historically, the Pilot holds roughly 70-75% of its value after three years in the UAE, outperforming American and European rivals in the same segment.

Performance & Capability

The 280 hp V6 engine provides a top speed of 175 km/h and smooth highway overtaking power, even when fully loaded with eight passengers. Its Intelligent Traction Management system allows the driver to toggle between modes for sand and gravel, making it capable of handling weekend trips to desert campsites. The nine-speed automatic transmission is tuned for efficiency, keeping RPMs low during high-speed cruising for a quieter cabin.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is optimized for the GCC climate with a powerful tri-zone automatic climate control system that includes dedicated vents and controls for the second row. Acoustic-laminated glass and active noise cancellation create a peaceful environment, essential for keeping the family comfortable during peak summer. The 'One-Touch' second-row seats provide the easiest third-row access in its class, a favorite feature for parents with young children.

Safety

This Pilot comes standard with a 5-star NHTSA safety rating and the comprehensive Honda Sensing suite. Key features for local driving include Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Monitor for navigating multi-lane highways and a multi-angle rearview camera. Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist help reduce driver fatigue during long desert highway stretches between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The bottom line

For the GCC family needing maximum seating and Japanese reliability, this low-depreciation EX-L trim offers the perfect balance of luxury features and long-term durability.
