Hyundai Kona SMART

• 6.2 L/100km official combined fuel economy
• 50-litre fuel tank capacity
• 1,300 kg braked towing capacity

Summary

This 2021 Hyundai Kona offers a practical entry into the compact SUV segment, balancing modern styling with low running costs. With a fuel-efficient 2.0L engine, it is perfectly suited for daily city commutes in Dubai or Riyadh while remaining comfortable for highway stretches. The black exterior is a highly desirable choice for resale in the GCC market, and the mileage is well within the expected range for a vehicle of this age. As an American spec model, it provides a cost-effective alternative to GCC equivalents, making it a smart buy for those seeking a modern crossover on a budget. The Kona’s agile footprint and elevated seating position make it a standout choice for navigating fast-moving highway traffic and tight urban spaces alike.

This Car vs Other 2021 Konas

With 77,000 km on the odometer, this Kona has been driven roughly 25,000 km per year, which is typical for a commuter vehicle in the GCC where highway distances are significant. The black paint is a strong resale color in the local market, holding value better than niche colors. While American spec models often enter the market at a lower price point than GCC versions, this car presents a significant upfront saving for a late-model SUV.

SMART vs Lower Trims

The SMART trim serves as an essential mid-tier step, adding key features that GCC buyers value over the base model, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration for seamless navigation. You also benefit from a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 17-inch alloy wheels, which provide a more premium feel and better road presence than the entry-level 16-inch steel wheels found on lower trims.

Kona vs Segment Rivals

The Kona competes directly with the Kia Seltos and Nissan Kicks, leading the segment with a more focused, driver-centric cabin and a punchy 2.0L engine that feels more capable at highway speeds than the smaller powertrains in many rivals. Its compact 11-meter turning circle makes it easier to maneuver in dense city traffic compared to the slightly bulkier crossovers in this class.

Running Costs & Resale

Expect real-world fuel consumption of around 6.2 to 8.3 L/100km depending on GCC stop-start traffic versus open highway driving. While American spec vehicles generally experience a faster depreciation rate of 15-20% compared to GCC spec cars, they offer a much lower entry price. Parts are widely available through Hyundai's extensive authorized network across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, though buyers should note that American imports typically do not carry a local agency warranty.

Performance & Capability

The 2.0L engine delivers a steady 147 hp, allowing for a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 9.7 seconds, which is ample for merging onto fast-moving emirate highways. With a braked towing capacity of 1,300 kg and three selectable drive modes (Eco, Comfort, and Sport), it handles weekend trips between cities with ease. The front-wheel-drive setup is optimized for fuel efficiency and smooth pavement cruising rather than off-road use.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the Kona features a 60/40 split-folding rear seat that expands the cargo area from a standard 19.2 cubic feet to 45.8 cubic feet, making it highly versatile for grocery runs or small furniture. The air conditioning is responsive, and the cabin insulation provides a quiet environment away from the heat and road noise. The 5-seat layout is spacious enough for a small family, with a dual-level cargo floor for hidden storage.

Safety

Safety is a priority in this trim, featuring Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist as standard to help with long desert highway drives. It also includes Driver Attention Warning, which monitors for signs of fatigue during extended commutes. Multiple airbags and a high-strength steel chassis provide peace of mind in high-speed traffic environments.

The bottom line

This 2021 Kona is an ideal match for a young professional or a small family looking for a stylish, fuel-efficient SUV that is easy to park and maintain in the GCC.
