Summary

This 2019 Hyundai Kona GLS offers a compelling mix of turbocharged performance and urban agility, perfectly suited for the fast-paced lifestyle of Dubai or Riyadh. With 78,000 km, this vehicle has been driven roughly 15,600 km per year, which is significantly lower than the GCC annual average, suggesting a well-preserved mechanical life. The striking blue exterior stands out as a vibrant yet professional choice that holds its appeal well in the local pre-owned market. Compared to standard compact crossovers, this turbo-equipped GLS provides the necessary punch for confident highway overtaking on the E11. It remains one of the most practical entry points into the premium subcompact segment, backed by a service network that spans every major city in the region.

This Car vs Other 2019 Konas

At 78,000 km, this Kona sits well below the typical 100,000–125,000 km range expected for a five-year-old vehicle in the GCC. While many 2019 models on the market are basic 2.0L versions, this GLS trim features the superior 1.6L turbocharged engine, offering a much more responsive driving experience for the same footprint. The blue finish is a refreshing departure from the common white and silver fleet, while remaining a desirable shade for resale in the UAE and Saudi markets.

GLS vs Lower Trims

The GLS trim is a significant step up from the base SE or SEL trims, most notably replacing the standard 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with the 1.6L Turbo-GDI powerhouse. Buyers also benefit from upgraded 18-inch alloy wheels and LED lighting signatures that give the car a more premium road presence. Inside, the GLS adds crucial driver assistance tech like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, features that are essential for navigating multi-lane GCC highways safely.

Kona vs Segment Rivals

The Kona leads rivals like the Honda HR-V and Nissan Juke in pure performance, thanks to its turbocharged torque which makes it feel far more capable during high-speed highway merges. Its compact dimensions result in a tight 10.6m turning circle, making it easier to park in crowded malls compared to the slightly larger Toyota C-HR. While competitors often prioritize utility, the Kona focuses on a driver-centric experience with a more sophisticated infotainment interface and superior cabin insulation.

Running Costs & Resale

With a manufacturer-official 7.1 L/100km combined rating, this Kona remains highly efficient even with the added turbo power, helping to offset costs during heavy city traffic. Hyundai's presence in the GCC is massive, with authorized centers like Juma Al Majid and Wallan providing affordable service every 10,000 km. The Kona has established a reputation for reliability in the heat, resulting in a stable depreciation curve that typically settles around 12-15% annually after the initial three-year drop.

Performance & Capability

The 1.6L turbocharged engine delivers a verified 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds, placing it at the top of its class for acceleration. This power is managed by a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that provides a sportier feel than the CVTs found in many Japanese competitors. Despite being Front Wheel Drive, the 170mm ground clearance is more than enough to handle speed bumps, gravel tracks, and the occasional sandy roadside parking common in the Emirates.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to keep five occupants cool in the extreme GCC summer, featuring a high-output air conditioning system and solar glass that reduces thermal transfer. The GLS trim includes a 7-inch touchscreen with full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration for seamless navigation across the region. With the rear seats folded, you get up to 1,143 litres of cargo space, making it a versatile companion for weekend staycations or grocery runs.

Safety

Safety is a hallmark of the GLS trim, which comes standard with a full suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a lane-keeping assist system that provides peace of mind on long desert drives. The vehicle is also equipped with six airbags and Electronic Stability Control, ensuring maximum protection for all passengers in both city and highway environments.

The bottom line

For the urban professional seeking a low-mileage, GCC-spec crossover that doesn't compromise on power, this turbocharged Kona GLS is a standout choice in today's market.
