Summary

This 2023 Ford Explorer Base offers a highly practical entry into the mid-size SUV segment, featuring the durable 3.3L V6 engine preferred by many GCC buyers for its naturally aspirated simplicity. With 71,926 km on the clock, this vehicle has been used consistently for regional highway commuting and is well within the expected lifecycle for a robust American SUV in this market. The black exterior remains a staple for resale liquidity across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, providing a sleek, professional look that holds its value well. As a GCC-spec model, it is factory-optimized for extreme summer heat with a cooling system designed for the local climate. It represents a versatile family workhorse that balances daily city errands with the capability needed for cross-border road trips.

This Car vs Other 2023 Explorers

At roughly 72,000 km, this Explorer's mileage is typical for a two-year-old vehicle in the GCC, where long-distance highway driving is standard. While many base models in the region utilize the 2.3L EcoBoost, this unit features the 3.3L V6, offering a more traditional power delivery that many local owners prefer for long-term maintenance. The black paint is a high-demand resale choice, ensuring the vehicle remains a liquid asset in the secondary market.

BASE vs Lower Trims

The Base trim serves as the essential foundation for the Explorer lineup, yet it still includes the Terrain Management System which is vital for handling gravel and sand surfaces found across the Emirates. It provides the full seven-seat capacity and tri-zone climate control standard, ensuring rear passengers stay cool during the peak of summer. Unlike lower-tier crossovers, this trim maintains a rear-wheel-drive-based AWD architecture for better towing stability.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer distinguishes itself from rivals like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot by offering a more truck-like, rear-biased drivetrain that feels more planted on open GCC highways. It provides a significant advantage in towing stability and a rugged chassis feel that competitors often lack. While rivals focus on car-like softness, the Explorer leans into its heritage of durability and multi-terrain capability.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.3L V6 powertrain is known for reliable performance in high-temperature environments, with service centers like Al Tayer and Premier Motors providing extensive coverage across the UAE. Maintenance typically follows 10,000 km intervals, though the heavy dust conditions of the GCC may require more frequent filter inspections. Ford Explorers generally see a depreciation rate of 12-15% annually in the local market, benefiting from a massive parts network that keeps long-term ownership costs predictable.

Performance & Capability

Generating 285 hp, the 3.3L V6 provides smooth acceleration suited for merging onto fast-moving highways like E11. The Intelligent AWD system works in tandem with the Terrain Management System, featuring specific modes for slippery surfaces and trail driving. This makes it an ideal companion for family weekend trips to the desert periphery or hauling light trailers for outdoor activities. The 10-speed automatic transmission ensures the engine stays in its optimal power band for both fuel efficiency and overtaking.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for large families, offering three rows of seating with dedicated air conditioning vents for every passenger to combat the desert heat. The 8-inch touchscreen includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keeping the driver connected during long commutes between emirates. Sound insulation is a highlight, providing a quiet environment that shields passengers from road noise during high-speed highway cruising.

Safety

Safety is comprehensive with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite, including Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert, which is essential for multi-lane Dubai traffic. The vehicle also features Lane-Keeping System and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. Standard side-wind stabilization is particularly useful during the shamal winds often encountered on open desert roads.

The bottom line

For a GCC family seeking a dependable, V6-powered seven-seater with modern safety tech and strong local support, this Explorer is a sensible and high-value choice.
