UAE-Made Theeb X01 Revealed: All You Need To Know About UAE’s New Off-Road SUV

Designed in the UAE, engineered for Gulf terrain, and packing 550hp with a plug-in hybrid setup, the new Theeb X01 wants to prove the Middle East can build more than just demand for SUVs. It wants to build the SUVs as well.

For decades, the GCC has been one of the world’s biggest SUV playgrounds. From desert drives in Liwa to mountain runs through Jebel Jais, this region has shaped a culture around big, capable off-roaders. But almost every SUV dominating Gulf roads today was designed somewhere else first. Now, that might finally be changing.

At Make it in the Emirates 2026 (MIITE), Abu Dhabi-based mobility and technology company K2 revealed a brand-new automotive marque named Theeb, along with its first model: the Theeb X01. And no, this isn’t another rebadged crossover pretending to be rugged because it has black cladding and an “Adventure” badge slapped on the boot.

The X01 has been designed specifically for Gulf terrain and lifestyles. Desert off-roading capability, long-distance cruising, practicality for the family, and harsh climate durability were considered from the beginning, instead of being adapted during later stages of development.

What Is Theeb?

Theeb is a new UAE-born automotive brand created by K2, an Abu Dhabi-based company operating across multiple industries including mobility and technology. The name “Theeb” translates to “wolf” in Arabic, symbolising endurance, resilience, and strength. 

Even the logo carries regional significance, using a geometric interpretation of the Arabic word inspired by “Rasm,” one of the earliest forms of undotted Arabic script. In a market flooded with global brands trying to localise products for the GCC, Theeb is attempting the opposite approach: build the vehicle around Gulf requirements from day one.

Sean Teo, Managing Director of K2, explained the philosophy behind the project: “Many vehicles on our roads today were originally designed for entirely different climates, terrains, and lifestyles before being adapted for this market. With THEEB, we wanted to begin from a different perspective, one shaped around the realities of the Gulf and the people who call it home.”

What Are The Theeb X01 Specifications?

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 550hp and 760Nm. That immediately places it in proper performance SUV territory.

The setup includes:

• Dual electric motors
• 4WD
• 4DHT transmission
• Plug-in hybrid system with a 19.45kWh battery

That battery size should also give it a decent Pure EV range. Exact range figures, however, are yet to be revealed. Unlike many modern “soft-roaders,” the X01 also appears to retain proper off-road hardware underneath. 

Reports suggest it uses a body-on-frame chassis along with solid axles front and rear: a configuration that’s increasingly rare today, and only used by hardcore off-roaders like the Toyota Land Cruiser 70, Jeep Wrangler, 212 T01, Ineos Grenadier, and older generations of the Nissan Patrol. That’s exactly what buyers in the region appreciate. Nobody in the UAE wants to discover their “Adventure SUV” taps out the moment tyre pressure drops below 20 PSI.

Is The Theeb X01 Actually Built For Desert Driving?

That appears to be the entire point of the vehicle. The X01 offers 13 drive modes including:

• Sand
• Rock
• Wade
• Crawl
• Tank Turn

Ground clearance stands at 235mm, placing it firmly within serious off-road territory. The hybrid setup also makes technical sense for desert driving. Electric motors deliver instant torque at low speeds, which can help maintain momentum in soft sand and improve rock-crawling precision when you hit the wadis or the mountains. It’s an interesting middle ground between traditional off-roaders and modern electrified SUVs. 

What Variants Will Be Available?

The Theeb X01 will launch in three trims:

• Base
• Lux
• Sport

The Base trim introduces the core design and hardware package. The Lux trim adds more premium touches including body-coloured cladding, illuminated door-line strips, and more.  Then there’s the Sport trim, which looks like it drove straight out of an overlanding Instagram reel shot somewhere near Fossil Rock.

The Sport trim adds:

• Roof rack
• LED light bar
• Snorkel
• Reinforced bull bar
• All-terrain tyres

And thankfully, this doesn’t look like fake off-road theatre. The hardware appears functional rather than decorative.

What Colours Will The Theeb X01 Come In?

The colours also carry Arabic-inspired naming:

• Shamsa Yellow (“Sun”)
• Rimal Pearl (“Sand”)
• Hajar Grey (“Rock”)

It’s a small detail, but it reinforces the brand’s regional identity instead of trying to imitate Western or Japanese SUV branding trends.

Will The Theeb X01 Be Made In The UAE?

That seems to be the plan. K2 says the X01 is intended for assembly in Abu Dhabi using a semi-knocked-down (SKD) production approach. Components manufactured externally will reportedly be assembled locally.

While pricing, production timelines, and manufacturing partners haven’t yet been confirmed, the reveal itself is significant. The UAE has previously invested heavily in mobility, EV infrastructure, and future transport technology. But seeing a locally developed SUV brand targeting mainstream GCC buyers feels different, especially in a region where SUVs are practically part of the cultural fabric.

Why Is The Theeb X01 A Big Deal?

The X01 represents something the Middle East hasn’t really had before: a regionally designed off-roader developed around GCC use cases rather than imported priorities. Whether Theeb can genuinely compete against established giants like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, or Land Rover Defender remains to be seen.

But the ambition is undeniable. A 550hp UAE-developed hybrid SUV with tank-turn functionality already sounds far more interesting than another anonymous crossover with a giant screen and fake exhaust tips.
