Toyota Land Cruiser FJ vs Toyota Fortuner: Which SUV Is Better For UAE Buyers?

Toyota now has two body-on-frame SUVs sitting surprisingly close in the UAE market. The new Land Cruiser FJ brings a compact five-seat format, modern technology and traditional Land Cruiser off-road thinking. The Fortuner takes a more family-focused approach with seven seats, a larger body and the choice of four-cylinder or V6 petrol power.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has officially launched in the UAE with prices starting from AED 139,900, placing it directly within the Fortuner’s price range.

They also overlap in many ways. Both use part-time 4WD, six-speed automatic transmissions and ladder-frame construction. Their 2.7-litre engines even produce the same 164hp and 245Nm.

However, the similarities largely end there. The Land Cruiser FJ is designed as a compact adventure-focused 4×4, while the Fortuner has to balance off-road ability with the needs of a larger family.

So, which Toyota SUV makes more sense for UAE buyers?

Design & Road Presence

The Land Cruiser FJ is the more distinctive of the two.

The FJ also uses separate bumper corner sections that can be replaced individually if damaged during off-road driving.

The Fortuner has a more traditional SUV shape. It is longer, lower and less boxy, with a swept-back front end, roof spoiler and a design aimed at balancing family use with rugged capability.

At 4,610mm long, the FJ is 185mm shorter than the Fortuner. Both are exactly 1,855mm wide, while the FJ stands 115mm taller.

The Fortuner therefore has the proportions of a larger family SUV, while the FJ looks and feels more like a compact off-roader.

Size & Platform

Both SUVs use proper ladder-frame construction rather than crossover-style monocoque platforms.

The Fortuner also uses body-on-frame construction and part-time 4WD with high and low range.

However, its 2,745mm wheelbase is 165mm longer than the FJ’s. That extra length helps the Fortuner accommodate a third row, but the shorter FJ should be easier to manoeuvre through tight trails, parking areas and narrow urban roads.

Cabin Experience

This is where the newer Land Cruiser FJ starts to show its advantage.

Every UAE-spec FJ gets a 12.3-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch TFT driver display, dual-zone automatic climate control, smart entry and push-button start. Higher specifications also add synthetic leather upholstery and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

The Fortuner has a more traditional interior. It uses an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a 4.2-inch TFT information display.

Higher Fortuner variants add useful comfort features such as leather upholstery, powered front seats, ventilated front seats and tri-zone automatic climate control.

The Fortuner therefore has plenty of equipment at the upper end of the range, but the FJ’s larger displays and newer dashboard layout give it a more modern cabin.

Space & Practicality

The biggest difference is simple: five seats versus seven. The Land Cruiser FJ is strictly a two-row SUV. Its shorter dimensions suit buyers who don’t need a third row and prefer a more compact vehicle for city driving and off-road use.

The Fortuner offers three rows and seven seats. That immediately makes it more practical for larger families, school runs and buyers who regularly carry more than five passengers.

The Fortuner also has an 80-litre fuel tank compared with the FJ’s 63 litres, giving it another practical advantage during longer trips.

Its third row comes with the usual space compromises found in mid-size seven-seat SUVs. Features & Technology

The technology gap becomes more noticeable when looking at driver assistance. The Land Cruiser FJ can be equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3, including Pre-Collision Safety, Lane Departure Alert, automatic high beam and Adaptive High Beam System.

Depending on specification, it also offers Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Panoramic View Monitor.

The Fortuner also offers a useful list of equipment. Depending on the variant, features include front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view or panoramic-view camera, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

However, the FJ provides the broader active driver-assistance package. Combined with its larger infotainment display, digital instrument screen and wireless smartphone integration, it feels considerably newer from behind the wheel.

Performance & Driving Feel

The comparison becomes more interesting under the bonnet. The Land Cruiser FJ uses a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre four-cylinder producing 164hp and 245Nm.

Interestingly, the entry-level Fortuner uses a 2.7-litre four-cylinder producing exactly the same output. Both are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions.

However, the Fortuner also offers a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 producing 235hp and 376Nm. That gives the V6 Fortuner 71hp and 131Nm more than the FJ.

The difference should be particularly noticeable during motorway overtaking, when carrying a full load of passengers, and during dune driving, where maintaining momentum matters.

The FJ counters with its smaller dimensions and shorter wheelbase. Instead of focusing on outright performance, its package is built around manoeuvrability, low-speed control and compact off-road ability.

Fuel Efficiency & Range

The available powertrains are relatively close in official fuel consumption.

The Fortuner 2.7 returns 10.4km/L, followed by the Land Cruiser FJ at 10.1km/L. The more powerful Fortuner 4.0 V6 is rated at 9.6km/L.

However, the Fortuner carries 80 litres of fuel compared with 63 litres in the FJ.

That larger tank gives the Fortuner an advantage for long motorway journeys, cross-Emirates driving and extended trips away from fuel stations.

The FJ sacrifices some touring range for its shorter, more compact overall package.

Off-Road Capability

Both Toyotas are genuine 4x4s, not road-focused SUVs with basic all-wheel drive. The Land Cruiser FJ gets part-time 4WD, low range, Hill Start Assist, Downhill Assist Control and a locking rear differential. Its short wheelbase and compact dimensions should also help across crests, tight tracks and technical sections.

The Fortuner also gets part-time 4WD with low range, while selected variants add a locking rear differential. Their strengths are slightly different.

The FJ’s 2,580mm wheelbase makes it the more compact package for technical terrain. The Fortuner’s available 4.0-litre V6 provides considerably more power and torque, which becomes useful in deep sand and during steep dune climbs.

For technical trails, the FJ’s dimensions work in its favour. For high-energy dune driving, the V6 Fortuner has significantly more power available.

Ownership In The UAE

Pricing puts the two SUVs head-to-head. The Land Cruiser FJ range starts at AED 139,900 and goes up to AED 154,900. The Fortuner starts lower at AED 128,900, while the range extends through to AED 173,900.

That gives the Fortuner a much wider spread. Buyers can enter the range for less than the FJ, choose the 4.0-litre V6 in the middle of the range, or spend more for additional comfort equipment.

The FJ range is simpler. Both variants use the same engine and drivetrain, so the price difference comes mainly from equipment, not extra performance.

Daily Driving In The UAE

For everyday UAE driving, both SUVs have clear advantages depending on the buyer. The Land Cruiser FJ is shorter and easier to manoeuvre, while its 12.3-inch infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity and available Toyota Safety Sense 3 technology make commuting and motorway driving more convenient. Its newer camera and driver-assistance systems should also help with parking and lane changes.

The Fortuner suits buyers who need more passenger capacity. Seven seats, an 80-litre fuel tank and a larger cabin make it better suited to family use and longer journeys. Buyers choosing the V6 also get noticeably stronger performance.

Verdict

The Land Cruiser FJ and Fortuner serve different buyers despite sharing Toyota’s traditional body-on-frame SUV formula.
