Volkswagen ID. Buzz Sets World Record After 99,767km Across 92 Countries

Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. Buzz has completed one of the most ambitious EV road trips yet, travelling 99,767km through 92 countries across six continents. The journey lasted 445 days and earned the electric van an official Guinness World Records title.

German long-distance driver Rainer Zietlow completed the journey in a production-spec Volkswagen ID.Buzz Pro Long Wheelbase.Buzz Pro Long Wheelbase. He started at the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles facility in Hanover, Germany, on 1 July 2025, and returned to Hanover on 14 September 2026.

What World Record Did The Volkswagen ID. Buzz Set?

The journey secured the Guinness World Records title for the most countries visited during a continuous journey in a battery-powered electric vehicle.

Over the course of the trip, the ID. Buzz travelled through major cities, deserts, mountain regions and a wide range of climates and road conditions. Moving between continents required 16 sea crossings, during which the van was transported aboard container ships.

Zietlow received the Guinness World Records certificate at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover. It is also Zietlow’s ninth Guinness World Records title achieved using a Volkswagen or Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles vehicle.

Which Volkswagen ID.Buzz Was Used?

The vehicle was not a specially developed prototype. Zietlow used a series-production Volkswagen ID. Buzz Pro with the long-wheelbase configuration.

The record-setting model was equipped with an 86kWh net battery and offered a claimed WLTP driving range of approximately 483km to 498km, depending on specification and equipment.

DC fast charging peaks at 200kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes under suitable conditions. The van also completed the trip on production-spec Giti tyres.

Using an essentially standard vehicle makes the achievement particularly relevant to EV owners, as the journey became an extreme real-world durability test rather than a controlled circuit record attempt.

Almost 100,000km With No Technical Breakdown

Perhaps the most impressive part of the journey is not the number of countries visited but how the vehicle performed along the way.

The ID. Buzz completed the entire 99,767km trip without suffering a technical breakdown. The vehicle had to cope with very different road surfaces, temperatures, traffic conditions and charging networks during more than a year of continuous travel.

After its return, TÜV Nord recorded the high-voltage battery at a 95.75% state of health. This means the battery remained in notably strong condition despite nearly 100,000km of driving and more than 300 charging cycles.

Battery degradation remains a major concern for buyers considering an electric vehicle, particularly in regions with extreme temperatures. While one vehicle’s results cannot represent every ID. Buzz or EV battery, the record provides an interesting example of how a modern EV battery can perform under intensive long-distance use.

Charging Was The Bigger Challenge

The mechanical side of the journey may have gone smoothly, but finding electricity was not always easy.

Charging infrastructure varied significantly between countries. In countries such as Zambia and Tanzania, public charging stations were effectively unavailable. The team instead had to arrange charging at national electrical facilities under supervision.

Other African markets proved easier. South Africa, Morocco and Rwanda had more developed charging infrastructure.

The experience was very different in China, where EVs and charging stations are already widely integrated into everyday transport.

Saudi Arabia’s EV Network Gets A Mention

One of the trip’s more interesting observations, particularly for buyers in the Middle East, was the development of charging infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom had relatively few chargers when Zietlow visited around three years earlier. During the latest journey, he found the charging network had expanded significantly, with its development approaching levels seen in more mature EV markets.

Rapid charging-network growth was also seen in countries including Brazil and Chile.

The experience shows that long-distance EV travel still depends heavily on where the vehicle is being driven. In mature EV markets, planning a charging stop is becoming routine. In less-developed regions, completing the same journey can require considerably more preparation.

A Major Real-World Test For The ID. Buzz

World records usually focus on speed, distance or efficiency under very specific conditions. The ID. Buzz World Tour was different because the vehicle spent more than a year on real roads, borders, temperatures, charging networks, and everyday driving conditions.

It also covered almost 100,000km, giving the ID. Buzz an unusually demanding real-world durability test.

The most significant result may be the vehicle’s condition after the record attempt. Completing the journey without a reported technical breakdown is impressive, but retaining 95.75% battery health after the trip makes the achievement more relevant for EV buyers.

The record also highlights how quickly global EV infrastructure is developing. Driving an electric vehicle through 92 countries is still far more complicated than a normal daily commute, but this journey shows that the limits of long-distance electric travel continue to expand.
