Used Toyota Prado Buying Guide: Problems, Best Years And Prices In The UAE
The best used Toyota Prado for most UAE buyers is a 2016-2023 GCC-spec J150 with the 4.0 V6 and a six-speed automatic. It offers proven mechanics, enough power, and plenty of choice. As of 22 October 2026, DubiCars lists 847 used Prados, with an average starting price of AED 95,000. Whichever one you look at, check three things first: the KDSS and air suspension, any sand or flood damage, and whether recall work has been done (confirm it by VIN).
Which Prado Generation Are You Looking At?
| Generation | Years (GCC) | Engines | Power | Gearbox | Key tech |

The J150 was facelifted in September 2013 and September 2017. Our Prado history and generations story covers each one in more detail.
Used Prado Checklist For The UAE
Sand And Off-Road Damage
Many Prados go off-road, and it shows underneath. Check the underbody, sills, CV boots, differentials, and wheel bearings. Be wary of aftermarket lift kits unless you know who fitted them.
AC
Run all three AC zones at idle and make sure the rear vents blow properly cold, not just the front.
Flood History
The April 2024 floods damaged many cars, and some were cleaned up and resold. Here’s how to check a car for flood damage.
Chassis Number And Service History
Run a chassis number check for accident history, and ask for Al-Futtaim service records, including any recall work. Some 2010 to 2016 Prados have been fitted with newer front ends and sold as 2023 or 2024 models, so confirm the real model year by VIN.
GCC Spec Or Import
Most GCC Prados are petrol. Japanese and Australian diesel imports do turn up, and they bring different parts and problems. Our guide to GCC vs imported specs explains what to look out for.
Toyota Prado J120 (2003-2009): What To Check

A J120 is now at least 17 years old, and supply is very thin. At the time of writing, DubiCars has a single 2008 listing at AED 37,000. Owners and specialists rate it as very reliable, but many have been driven off-road, so look closely for wear from sand and rough tracks. On a car this age, condition and history matter more than the badge, so budget for a thorough inspection. If you’re looking at an imported 3.0 diesel, check the 1KD injector seats, which are a reported weak point.
Toyota Prado J150 (2009-2024): Common Problems

This is the Prado most buyers end up with, and its reported issues are well known. These are owner and specialist reports, not proven faults on every car.
4.0 V6 Head Gaskets And Manifolds
The 1GR-FE V6 is tough, but head gaskets can fail at high mileage, especially on a car that has overheated. Early exhaust manifold cracks and timing cover leaks are also reported. Check the coolant level and condition, and look for any sign of a past overheat.
2.7 Timing Chain And Oil Smoke
On the 2TR-FE four-cylinder, watch for timing chain stretch, which shows up as a rattle on start-up, and blue smoke from worn valve stem seals.
KDSS And Rear Air Suspension
Top trims have KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), which loosens the anti-roll bars off-road for more wheel travel and stiffens them on the road. Some also have rear air suspension. Reports include leaking air bags, cars that sag overnight, compressor faults, and suspension warning lights. Check how the car sits after it’s been parked, and look for warnings on the dash.
Recalls On 2010 And 2013 Cars
- 2010 VX and VX-L: these needed a software update for the VSC stability control. Al-Futtaim paused sales in April 2010 while the fix was rolled out.
- 2013 model year: 1,541 UAE Prados were recalled for valve springs that could crack and cause the engine to stall.
Ask Al-Futtaim to confirm by VIN that the recall work was done. Imported J150 diesels have their own issues, including DPF and EGR problems on the 1GD engine (Toyota Australia faced a class action over its DPFs).
Toyota Prado J250 (2024-On): Too Young For Patterns

The J250 launched in the UAE in June 2024 with a 2.4 turbo making 267hp and 430Nm. New prices ran from AED 199,900 for the TXR to AED 264,900 for the VXR (see the Prado trims). Used examples start from about AED 155,000. There’s no long-term data yet, so there are no reliable patterns to warn you about. In Australia, the J250 was recalled for a knee-airbag bolt and instrument cluster software. It’s not clear whether either recall covers GCC cars, so ask Al-Futtaim. A young J250 may still be under factory warranty, so check what’s left. For the full picture, read our Prado review.
Prado 2.7 vs 4.0: Which Engine Should You Buy?
Buy the 4.0 V6 if you can. With 271hp against the 2.7’s 161 to 164hp, the difference is obvious on a highway on-ramp with seven people and luggage on board. The 2.7 is widely described as slow, and cars built before June 2015 also have the old four-speed gearbox. A 2.7 makes sense only if your budget is tight and you mostly drive in town.

Is The Toyota Prado Reliable?
Yes. The Prado’s long reputation in the UAE is well-earned, and its known faults are specific and easy to check, not widespread. Most problems come from hard off-road use, skipped servicing or suspension parts wearing out with age. A well-maintained GCC car with its recalls done is one of the safer used SUV buys here.
Which Used Prado Should You Buy?
- Best overall: a 2018 to 2023 GCC 4.0 V6 J150. It has the 2017 facelift, the six-speed auto and proven mechanicals.
- Best value: a 2016 or 2017 4.0 V6. It has the same six-speed drivetrain, and 2016 cars average about AED 25,000 less than 2018 cars.
- Buy a J250 if you want the latest tech and safety, and possibly some factory warranty, and you’re comfortable with a car with no long-term record.
- Check very carefully: 2010 VX models, 2013 cars, any KDSS or air-suspension car without service records, and imported diesels.
If the Prado doesn’t suit you, compare it with the Land Cruiser, the Nissan Patrol (see our used Patrol guide), the Mitsubishi Pajero (see our Pajero vs Prado comparison), the Toyota Fortuner, the Kia Mohave or the Lexus GX. The GX470, GX460 and GX550 are the Lexus versions of the three Prado generations. You can also see the latest Toyota Prado.
