Used Nissan Patrol Buying Guide: What To Check Before Paying

Used Nissan Patrol Buying Guide: What To Check Before Paying

Few used SUVs have as much appeal in the UAE as the Nissan Patrol. Whether it is an old-school Y60, a desert-ready Y61, a V8-powered Y62 or the latest Y63, there is a Patrol for almost every type of buyer.

However, buying one takes more than checking the year and mileage. Patrols are often used for long-distance driving, towing, and off-roading, and modified examples are common across the UAE. Two Patrols showing the same mileage can therefore have lived very different lives. Before paying for a used Nissan Patrol, check everything.

Know Which Nissan Patrol Generation You Are Buying

The four generations most UAE used-car buyers are likely to encounter are:

GenerationApproximate PeriodKey UAE EnginesCharacter
Y601987–19974.2L petrol among othersClassic, simple and rugged
Y611997 onwards4.5L & 4.8L petrolPopular desert/off-road Patrol
Y622010–20244.0L V6 & 5.6L V8Comfortable modern family SUV
Y632024 onwards3.8L V6 & 3.5L twin-turbo V6Latest technology and performance

The Y60 and Y61 remain favourites among UAE enthusiasts, while the Y62 is currently the most common modern used Patrol. The Y63 replaced the Y62 and introduced new V6 engines, a nine-speed automatic gearbox and considerably more technology.

Nissan Patrol Y60: What To Check

Nissan Patrol Buying Guide

The Y60 is now a classic Patrol, which means age often matters more than mileage.

Rust & Chassis Condition

Inspect the chassis rails, body mounts, crossmembers, wheel arches and underside carefully. Corrosion is a known consideration on ageing Y60s, particularly cars that have lived in harsher environments or been imported.

Cooling System & Overheating

Check the radiator, water pump, hoses and coolant carefully. On older TB42-powered examples, previous overheating can lead to head-gasket problems. Warning signs include coolant loss, white smoke, or contamination in the engine oil.

Steering & Front Axle

Ageing bushes, bearings and steering components can cause looseness, vibration or wandering.

Modifications

Many Y60s have been heavily modified for desert driving. Engine swaps, turbo conversions, suspension lifts, and aftermarket wiring need professional inspection. For a Y60, originality and restoration quality can influence value almost as much as mileage.

Nissan Patrol Y61: What To Check

Nissan Patrol Buying Guide

The Y61 remains extremely popular with UAE off-road enthusiasts, particularly examples fitted with the 4.8-litre TB48 petrol engine.

Cooling System

Again, overheating history should be one of the first things checked. This becomes especially important on highly modified or tuned cars.

Front Axle & Steering

Check carefully for steering vibration or front-end shimmy. Worn bearings, kingpins, bushes and steering components can create noticeable movement through the steering wheel.

Engine Modifications

The TB48 is extremely popular for performance tuning in the UAE. A modified Y61 should therefore come with evidence showing who completed the work and how the car was tuned. A professionally built turbo Patrol differs greatly from a vehicle fitted with poorly installed performance parts.

Gearbox & Clutch

On manual examples, check for clutch slip and difficulty selecting gears. On automatic cars, look for delayed or harsh shifts.

Diesel Models

Petrol Patrols dominate the UAE market, but imported Y61 diesel versions also exist. Earlier 3.0-litre ZD30 diesel engines have a more complicated reliability history, so engine condition and maintenance history deserve additional attention.

Nissan Patrol Y62: What To Check

Nissan Patrol Buying Guide

For many UAE used-car buyers, the Y62 offers the best balance between price, comfort, capability and availability. It was available with the 4.0-litre V6 and the much-loved 5.6-litre naturally aspirated V8.

Seven-Speed Automatic Gearbox

Check carefully for hesitation, jerking or rough low-speed changes. A smooth cold test drive is not enough. Drive the vehicle long enough for the gearbox to reach operating temperature.

HBMC Suspension

Higher-spec Y62s use Nissan’s Hydraulic Body Motion Control system. Check underneath for hydraulic leaks and make sure the Patrol sits correctly and does not bounce or lean excessively. HBMC repairs can become expensive compared with replacing conventional suspension parts.

Engine Noise & Oil Leaks

On the 5.6-litre V8, listen carefully during cold start for unusual timing-related noises or persistent ticking. Check around the engine for oil leaks and inspect the service history closely on high-mileage examples. UAE Patrol specialists also flag valve-cover leaks and timing-system wear as items worth checking as mileage increases.

Air-Conditioning

Test every air-conditioning zone. The Patrol has a large cabin, and its AC system works hard during UAE summers. Make sure the front and rear systems become properly cold and remain cold while idling.

Facelift Conversions

Be cautious with older Y62s converted to look like newer models. A facelift conversion doesn’t automatically mean there is anything wrong with the vehicle, but confirm its real model year, original trim, and accident history using the VIN rather than judging it by the exterior. Nissan Patrol Y63: What To Check

Nissan Patrol Buying Guide

The Y63 is still relatively new, so there isn’t enough long-term UAE data to establish the same reliability patterns as the Y60, Y61, or Y62.

That means buyers should concentrate on vehicle history, warranty coverage and making sure every system operates correctly.

Twin-Turbo V6

On 3.5-litre models, check that acceleration is smooth and consistent with no warning lights, unusual turbo noises, hesitation or smoke.

Nine-Speed Automatic

Gear changes should be almost seamless during normal driving. Test low-speed manoeuvres, motorway acceleration and kickdown.

Electronics & ADAS

The Y63 contains considerably more electronics than previous Patrols.

Test:

  • Cameras
  • Parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane assistance
  • Infotainment
  • Connected services
  • Digital displays
  • Powered seats
  • Climate controls
  • Electronic tailgate
  • Driver-assistance warnings

Suspension

Depending on specification, Y63 models can feature electronic damping or air suspension. Make sure the vehicle raises, lowers and adjusts correctly without suspension warnings.

Because the Y63 is still young, remaining manufacturer warranty and a complete Nissan service history should carry significant value.

How Much Does A Used Nissan Patrol Cost In The UAE?

Patrol prices vary enormously because the used market ranges from decades-old Y60s to almost-new Y63s.

Current DubiCars data shows hundreds of used Nissan Patrols listed across the UAE. Recent average starting prices include approximately:

Model YearAverage Starting Price
2021AED 118,000
2022AED 126,874
2023AED 144,919
2024AED 169,000
2026AED 261,000

Prices change continually based on mileage, trim, engine, condition, and specification.

Older Y60 and Y61 prices are much harder to generalise. Current UAE market examples show Y60s in roughly the AED 27,000–38,000 region, while the enormous Y61 market ranges from inexpensive older cars to late Super Safari models priced above AED 200,000.

Check The Patrol’s Market Value Before Making An Offer

Before agreeing to the seller’s asking price, check what the Patrol should actually be worth. DubiCars’ free car valuation tool uses UAE market and transaction data to provide an estimated market-backed vehicle value. This can help buyers identify whether a Patrol is attractively priced, roughly in line with the market or significantly overpriced.

Value a Nissan Patrol using the DubiCars Car Valuation tool. Remember, valuation tools can’t assess mechanical condition. An unusually cheap Patrol may simply require expensive work.

Get The Patrol Inspected Before Paying

A clean exterior and smooth ten-minute test drive cannot tell you everything about a used Patrol. DubiCars allows buyers to book a pre-purchase vehicle inspection powered by AutoHub.

The inspection includes more than 248 checkpoints covering the engine, transmission, mechanical systems, computer diagnostics, brakes, tyres, electrical systems, interior and exterior.

The service can also coordinate directly with the seller, and the inspection report can help you decide whether to buy, walk away or negotiate the price. Book a DubiCars pre-purchase vehicle inspection

Which Used Nissan Patrol Should You Buy?

Buy a Y60 if you want a classic Patrol and are prepared to prioritise mechanical and body condition over age or mileage.

Buy a Y61 if you want a rugged, relatively simple Patrol for off-road driving, particularly if you specifically want the 4.8-litre TB48 experience.

Buy a Y62 if you want the strongest overall used-buy proposition. There is a large selection in the UAE, and buyers can choose between the more affordable V6 and characterful 5.6-litre V8.

Buy a Y63 if you want the latest technology, stronger performance, better efficiency and potentially a remaining manufacturer warranty, but do not expect the same used-price advantage as an older Y62.
