CATL Enters Robotaxi Sector as UAE Prepares for Autonomous Vehicle Launch

CATL, the world’s leading EV battery maker, has officially entered the robotaxi market through a new joint venture. The move highlights the growing global momentum behind autonomous transport — a trend the UAE is also embracing with plans to launch robotaxi services soon.

What Is CATL’s New Robotaxi Venture?

CATL has partnered with Ant Group and Hello to form Shanghai Zaofu Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., a company focused on Level 4 autonomous driving. This means vehicles developed under this venture can operate without human drivers in most conditions.

The company was registered in Shanghai on 23 June with a capital of 1.288 billion yuan (about 177.5 million USD). Together, the partners have invested over 3 billion yuan (413.5 million USD) to drive the development and commercialisation of safe, self-driving technology.

How Does This Relate to the UAE’s Robotaxi Plans?

The UAE, particularly Dubai, is working towards deploying autonomous taxis on its roads. With official trials already underway and partnerships formed with global tech firms, the country aims to become a leader in self-driving mobility.

CATL’s entry into this space reflects a broader trend. As leading global firms invest in L4 autonomous systems, it strengthens the roadmap for countries like the UAE to adopt and localise similar technologies.

What Roles Do CATL, Ant Group, and Hello Play?

  • Hello brings mobility service experience and a strong R&D team focused on AI and autonomous driving. It’s already expanding beyond China.
  • Ant Group offers deep AI research capabilities, especially in areas like large language models, reinforcement learning, and privacy protection — all critical for self-driving systems.
  • CATL contributes its expertise in intelligent battery systems and advanced chassis technology, helping to integrate AI with vehicle hardware more effectively.

Why Does This Matter for Autonomous Driving Globally?

This joint venture shows how major players are not only focusing on EVs but are also pushing toward full autonomy. As countries like the UAE look to introduce robotaxis soon, developments like this help shape the global ecosystem for safe, smart transport.

With shared goals in innovation, mobility, and sustainability, CATL’s robotaxi launch could be a sign of more cross-border partnerships and technology sharing — especially with regions actively developing smart cities and future-ready infrastructure.
