DubiCars Car Spotlight — Toyota Fortuner: A Reliable, Dependable, Rugged & Comfortable SUV

It is no secret that Toyota is a hallmark of reliability and dependability. For several decades now, it has been known that if one wants a reliable and rugged car, one must get a Toyota. This is a reputation that has been forged over decades by a few cars that were so over-engineered that they just refused to break down.

One of those over-engineered cars that only added to Toyota’s already strong reputation is the Toyota Fortuner. The early 2000s were a time when all car manufacturers were choosing to make their cars softer to allow for more road-based usage. Toyota did the opposite with the Fortuner. Since the time it went into production in 2004, the Toyota Fortuner has been based on the venerable and tough Hilux platform.

Then in 2004, Toyota built the Fortuner on the Hilux’s platform and added more features inside the cabin for comfort. In this edition of the DubiCars Car Spotlight, we take a closer look at the history, generations, models, and more of the Toyota Fortuner.

First Generation | 2004 – 2015

At the Thailand Motor Expo in December 2004, Toyota revealed the Fortuner. It was a rugged and robust mid-size SUV that would quickly gain popularity in various markets around the world. The name Fortuner was derived from the word ‘Fortune.’ It was based on the seventh-generation Toyota Hilux pickup truck platform.

The Fortuner’s exterior featured a bold and aggressive design with a prominent front grille, muscular body lines, and a raised stance, giving it a commanding presence on the road. It was available in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, catering to a wide range of consumers.

The first-generation Fortuner came with several engine options. Petrol variants are powered by either a 2.7-litre inline-4 engine or a 4.0-litre V6 engine while diesel versions are powered by either 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre inline-4 turbo-diesel units.

These engines delivered sufficient power for both on-road and off-road driving. Off-road enthusiasts appreciated the Fortuner’s capable four-wheel-drive system and sturdy ladder-frame chassis. In 2011, the Toyota Fortuner underwent a major redesign and became a larger and more capable SUV.

Second Generation | 2015 – Present

The second-generation Toyota Fortuner went into production in 2015. By 2013, the first generation was found to be lacking in features and the new generation addressed this issue with a more modern interior. Even on the outside, the bulky SUV was equipped with larger wheels, and a more elaborate body kit was made available.

In 2020, the Fortuner underwent a major facelift and this time it came with sleek LED headlamps, a new front fascia, and great-looking alloy wheels. In terms of the engine options, the 2.7-litre inline-4 petrol and 4.0-litre V6 petrol continue to be offered. However, the number of diesel engine options grew, starting with a 2.4-litre inline-4 and going all the way up to a 3.0-litre inline-4.

Important features of the second-generation Toyota Fortuner include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control System
  • Differential Locks
  • Seven Seats
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Hill Assist Control

In summary, the second-generation Toyota Fortuner is a versatile and robust SUV that appeals to a wide range of drivers. It offers a combination of rugged off-road performance and modern comfort and technology, making it a popular choice for those who seek adventure without compromising on daily driving comfort.
