Ford Explorer BASE

• 2,268 kg maximum towing capacity
• 595 litres boot space behind the third row

Summary

This 2012 Ford Explorer is a highly practical family mover that remains a popular choice for GCC residents due to its robust 3.5L V6 engine and flexible seven-seat configuration. Finished in white, the most favored resale color in the region, this SUV offers strong value retention and excellent thermal management for the local climate. While the mileage is consistent with typical GCC annual usage for a decade-old family vehicle, its unibody construction provides a smoother highway ride between emirates compared to traditional body-on-frame alternatives. It stands out in its segment for balancing passenger comfort with genuine utility, making it a reliable workhorse for school runs and weekend road trips across the UAE and beyond.

This Car vs Other 2012 Explorers

At 182,000 km, this Explorer has been driven roughly 14,000 km per year, which is significantly below the GCC annual average of 20,000–25,000 km. Its white exterior is a major advantage for local buyers, as it reflects heat better during peak summer and remains the highest-demand color for resale in the UAE and Saudi markets. This combination of manageable mileage and high-demand spec makes it a standout entry in the current used market.

BASE vs Lower Trims

As the foundational trim for this generation, the Base model provides all the core essentials that GCC families prioritize, including powerful rear air conditioning vents and a 3.5L V6 as standard. Unlike lower-tier entry SUVs in this price bracket, it retains a full three-row layout and Ford's AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, ensuring safety is not sacrificed for value.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer frequently leads rivals like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander in towing capacity, offering a verified 2,268 kg limit when properly equipped. Its 70-liter fuel tank is well-suited for long desert highway stretches, such as the drive from Dubai to Salalah, providing competitive range between fill-ups. Additionally, its unibody platform offers a more refined, car-like handling experience than the Nissan Pathfinder models of the same era.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 averages around 12.4 L/100km, which is efficient for a seven-seater in GCC stop-start traffic. Ford maintains one of the most extensive authorized service networks across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring parts are affordable and easily sourced. Historically, GCC-spec Explorers hold their value well, typically seeing a steady depreciation curve of 10-12% annually, which is superior to many European competitors in this segment.

Performance & Capability

Delivering 290 hp and 346 Nm of torque, the Explorer offers confident highway overtaking even when fully loaded with seven passengers. The 6-speed automatic transmission is tuned for smooth shifts, making long-distance cruising across the Emirates effortless and quiet. With 193 mm of ground clearance, it easily handles gravel tracks and sandy beach approaches for weekend family outings.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for the high-temperature GCC environment, featuring a powerful dual-zone air conditioning system that ensures the third row stays cool even in 45°C+ heat. The interior offers flexible 60/40 split-folding second-row and 50/50 third-row seats, allowing you to prioritize either seven-passenger seating or a flat load floor for heavy shopping trips. Acoustic insulation keeps the cabin surprisingly quiet at highway speeds of 120-140 km/h.

Safety

The 2012 Explorer earned a 4-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, featuring a robust suite of airbags and stability systems. Standard safety includes Curve Control, which automatically slows the vehicle if it enters a turn too quickly—a vital feature for maintaining stability on sandy or rain-slicked GCC roads. It also comes equipped with SOS Post-Crash Alert and tire pressure monitoring, providing peace of mind for long family journeys.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Explorer is the ideal match for a growing family looking for a dependable seven-seater with a proven track record for durability and strong resale in the local market.
