Mazda CX-9 GS

Highlights

• 273 hp from a naturally aspirated V6
• 76-litre fuel tank
• Extensive GCC authorised service network

Summary

This 10-year-old Mazda CX-9 remains a compelling choice for families requiring a durable three-row crossover that balances Japanese engineering with everyday utility. While its mileage is higher than the typical GCC average for its age, the 3.7-litre V6 is a well-known quantity in the region, prized for its simple maintenance and smooth highway power. The Grey exterior is a neutral, sun-friendly choice that holds its professional look well under the harsh desert sun, maintaining better resale appeal than warmer tones. Compared to newer turbocharged rivals, this generation offers a more traditional driving feel and mechanical longevity that resonates with long-term owners. It stands out in the pre-owned market as a safe, predictable workhorse capable of handling the school run and cross-emirate commutes with ease.

This Car vs Other 2016 CX-9s

At 328,000 km, this vehicle has been driven more extensively than the 20,000–25,000 km annual average typically seen in the GCC. However, in this market, such mileage often reflects long-distance highway cruises between cities rather than punishing stop-start traffic, which can be easier on the transmission and cooling systems. The Grey paintwork is a highly practical choice for the region, resisting the visible effects of fine sand and maintaining a strong resale profile.

GS vs Lower Trims

The GS trim provides the essential comforts that GCC families prioritize, including a multi-zone climate control system that ensures the cabin stays cool even during peak summer months. It steps up from base configurations by offering a more refined interior layout with better seat adjustability and enhanced cabin insulation. For the practical buyer, this trim avoids some of the complex electronic sensors found in higher trims, which can be more expensive to replace as the vehicle ages.

CX-9 vs Segment Rivals

The CX-9 is frequently cross-shopped with the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, but it often leads on driving dynamics and aesthetic appeal. While rivals may offer slightly boxier cargo holds, the Mazda's build quality and dash materials feel a step above the standard plastic-heavy interiors of the era. Its large 76-litre fuel tank is also a significant advantage for those regularly driving the long desert stretches of the E11 or across to Riyadh.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.7L V6 typically averages around 11.2L/100km, though this can rise in the stop-start traffic of Dubai or Riyadh. Maintenance is a strong suit; Mazda enjoys an extensive authorized service network via Galadari in the UAE and Haji Husein Alireza in Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts are always available. While it depreciates slightly faster than a Toyota, the Japanese pedigree ensures it remains a liquid asset in the GCC used market compared to American or European equivalents.

Performance & Capability

The naturally aspirated 3.7L V6 generates 273 hp, providing a linear power delivery that makes highway overtaking confident and predictable. This engine is specifically favored in the GCC for its heat tolerance and lack of turbocharger complexity, making it robust for long-distance family road trips. While designed for the road, its ride height provides enough ground clearance for gravel tracks and sandy approach roads to weekend villas.

Comfort & Cabin

The seven-seat layout is genuinely practical, with the second row providing ample legroom for adult passengers and dedicated cooling vents for the rear. The air conditioning system is engineered for Japanese reliability, effectively managing cabin temperatures even when the outside thermometer hits 45°C. High-quality fabric seating is often preferred in this climate over leather, as it remains cooler to the touch after the car has been parked in the sun.

Safety

Safety is comprehensive for this generation, featuring advanced front and side-curtain airbags that protect all three rows of passengers. The standard stability and traction control systems are particularly effective on sand-drifted highways, while the anti-lock braking system is tuned for consistent performance in high-speed GCC traffic. This trim also includes a rearview camera, a vital tool for safely navigating large SUVs in busy shopping mall parking lots.

The bottom line

This CX-9 is an ideal match for a budget-conscious family leader who values the mechanical simplicity of a V6 engine and the peace of mind provided by a massive regional service network. It represents an honest, high-utility opportunity to own a reliable seven-seater that is ready for the rigors of GCC life.
