Summary

This 2016 FJ Cruiser XTREME represents one of the most durable off-roaders ever sold in the GCC, combining iconic retro styling with a powertrain engineered for extreme desert conditions. In the UAE market, White is the premier choice for resale value, effectively managing cabin heat while remaining the most sought-after color for second-hand buyers. With the XTREME trim, you gain specialized aesthetic upgrades and enhanced lighting that distinguish it from the standard GXR variants found on local roads. The FJ Cruiser remains a standout in its segment for its mechanical simplicity and bulletproof reliability, making it a lower-risk investment compared to more complex European rivals. For a buyer in the region, the combination of Toyota's vast service network and this model's legendary status makes it a uniquely safe and exciting purchase.

This Car vs Other 2016 FJ Cruisers

At 166,886 km, this vehicle sits within the average mileage range for a high-utility SUV in the GCC, where annual use typically reaches 20,000 to 25,000 km. The White exterior is widely regarded as the strongest resale color in the UAE, providing a distinct advantage when it comes time to trade in or sell. Unlike higher-mileage examples used solely for heavy desert bashing, this GCC-spec unit maintains the structural integrity required for both highway cruising and weekend adventures.

XTREME vs Lower Trims

The XTREME trim elevates the FJ Cruiser with a blacked-out aesthetic package, including darkened door handles, side mirrors, and a signature black radiator grille that replaces the silver finish of the GXR. It also benefits from upgraded LED headlights for superior visibility during night drives across the desert. Inside, you retain the critical off-road hardware like the rear differential lock and A-TRAC system while enjoying the trim-specific 17-inch alloy wheel design.

FJ Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

While rivals like the Jeep Wrangler offer open-top driving, the FJ Cruiser leads in long-distance reliability and cabin insulation, which are vital for the GCC's harsh summers. Its massive 159-litre dual-tank capacity significantly outclasses competitors, allowing for cross-border trips or deep desert excursions without the constant need for jerry cans. The Toyota also benefits from a much wider authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman compared to niche off-road brands.

Running Costs & Resale

The 4.0L V6 is designed to run efficiently on Mogas 95, with real-world fuel consumption averaging around 12.6 L/100km depending on how much time is spent in stop-start city traffic. Maintenance is straightforward, with 10,000 km service intervals supported by one of the largest parts inventories in the region. Historically, the FJ Cruiser has shown one of the lowest depreciation rates in the GCC, often retaining 70-80% of its value after three years due to its discontinued status and high demand among enthusiasts.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with a 245 mm ground clearance—the highest in the Land Cruiser family at its launch—this vehicle is built to clear dunes and rocky wadis with ease. The 270 hp V6 engine provides a reliable 380 Nm of torque, essential for maintaining momentum in soft sand or overtaking on the E11 highway. The inclusion of Crawl Control allows the vehicle to automatically manage throttle and braking at low speeds, letting the driver focus entirely on steering through difficult terrain.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is purposefully designed for the region, featuring water-resistant fabric seats and rubber floor mats that handle sand and dust without staining. The air conditioning system is famously powerful, a critical feature for maintaining a cool cabin environment when temperatures exceed 45°C. The unique three-gauge dashboard cluster, featuring a compass and inclinometer, serves as both a functional tool for off-roading and a nod to the car's heritage.

Safety

Safety is managed through a suite of ruggedized systems including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), which are specifically tuned to handle slippery surfaces like gravel and sand. The vehicle is equipped with front and side curtain airbags, alongside an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution to ensure stable stopping power on high-speed motorways. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are also included to assist with visibility in city environments.

The bottom line

Perfect for the weekend adventurer who needs a reliable daily driver, this XTREME trim FJ Cruiser offers the best resale security and off-road capability available in the GCC used market today.
