Summary

This 2021 Toyota Fortuner EXR strikes the perfect balance for GCC owners who need a dependable daily commuter that can handle spontaneous weekend desert trips. Its mileage is consistent with typical highway-heavy usage in the region, and being a GCC-spec Toyota, it benefits from the strongest resale demand and easiest parts availability in the market. The Grey exterior is a highly practical choice for the local climate, offering better heat management than black while maintaining a premium look. As a body-on-frame 7-seater, it offers a level of durability that monocoque rivals simply cannot match in harsh environments. This is a pragmatic purchase for families who prioritize long-term reliability and value retention above all else.

This Car vs Other 2021 Fortuners

With approximately 95,816 km, this vehicle sits within the expected range for a three-to-four-year-old SUV in the GCC, where annual averages often reach 25,000 km. The Grey paintwork is a strategic advantage for resale in the UAE and Saudi markets, consistently holding value better than niche colors. It presents a mechanically sound opportunity for a buyer looking for a proven workhorse without the 'brand-new' price premium.

EXR vs Lower Trims

The EXR trim serves as the essential gateway to Toyota's 4x4 capability, adding 17-inch alloy wheels and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay over more basic commercial variants. It includes the critical rear AC vents and third-row cooling that are absolute necessities for the GCC summer. Crucially, it retains the fabric seats which many local buyers prefer as they stay significantly cooler than leather after hours in the sun.

Fortuner vs Segment Rivals

When compared to the Mitsubishi Montero Sport or the Nissan X-Terra, the Fortuner leads with a vastly superior authorized service footprint across every GCC country, from small towns to major cities. Its 80-litre fuel tank provides a superior cruising range for long cross-border drives compared to many crossovers. The body-on-frame construction, shared with the legendary Hilux, gives it a durability edge on rocky wadi trails where rivals might feel fragile.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.7L engine is engineered for longevity and is compatible with standard 95-octane fuel available at every station in the region. Real-world fuel consumption averages around 12.4 L/100km, which is competitive for a heavy-duty 4WD vehicle in GCC stop-start traffic. Toyota's depreciation in the UAE is among the lowest in the industry, typically losing only 10% annually, making this one of the safest financial bets in the used car market.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp powertrain is designed for torque and reliability rather than outright speed, ensuring it can haul a full load of seven passengers across the Emirates with ease. It features a genuine 4WD system with a low-range transfer case, allowing it to navigate soft sand and steep dunes that would stop most city SUVs. With 220 mm of ground clearance, it clears speed bumps and rugged terrain with total confidence.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is a focused 7-seat environment designed to survive years of family use with high-quality, durable materials. Dual-zone manual climate control is paired with dedicated vents for all three rows, ensuring that even the rearmost passengers stay comfortable during 45°C afternoons. The 8-inch infotainment system provides modern connectivity for the daily commute, while the flat-folding rear seats allow for massive cargo flexibility.

Safety

Standard safety includes dual front airbags and a driver's knee airbag, complemented by Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) which is essential for maintaining composure on sandy or gravel-strewn roads. This trim also features Rear Parking Sensors and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System to help manage the stresses of high-speed highway driving. The ISOFIX child seat anchors make it a secure choice for families with young children.

The bottom line

For the GCC buyer who needs a bulletproof family 7-seater that won't lose its value, this GCC-spec Fortuner is the most logical choice on the market today.
