Summary

This 2017 Toyota Hilux DL represents a remarkable balance of utility and modern convenience, especially considering its 2.8L diesel powertrain which is often preferred in the GCC for its superior torque and long-range efficiency. With its mileage currently sitting well within the expected average for a six-year-old regional workhorse, this pickup offers many years of reliable service ahead. The rare Blue exterior provides a refreshing alternative to the sea of white and silver trucks usually found in the Emirates, adding a touch of personality without sacrificing professional appeal. In a market where Toyota’s reputation for reliability is a currency of its own, this specific DL trim bridges the gap between a rugged job-site vehicle and a comfortable family transporter. It stands out from competitors like the Mitsubishi L200 or Nissan Navara globally by offering a more robust resale profile and a powertrain that is famously simple to maintain even in remote desert areas. For any buyer in the GCC, the most important consideration is the peace of mind that comes with the most expansive service and parts network in the Middle East.

This Car vs Other 2017 Hiluxs

At 130,000 km, this Hilux has been driven roughly 18,500 km per year, which is notably lower than the GCC typical average of 25,000 km for commercial and lifestyle pickups. Most 2017 models currently on the market have already crossed the 200,000 km threshold due to heavy inter-emirate usage, making this a lower-mileage example that has likely seen more private use than industrial wear. The Blue paint is a standout feature for a model year where neutral tones dominates, and while it is unique, it maintains strong resale value because it is a factory-original Toyota metallic shade. Mechanically, the 2017 model year was the first to fully establish the reliability of the current eighth-generation platform in the harsh heat of the Saudi and Emirati deserts. Choosing this specific unit means benefiting from the initial depreciation hit already being taken, while still getting a vehicle that feels tight and responsive. It serves as a benchmark for what a well-maintained, medium-mileage Toyota truck should look and feel like after several years of regional operation.

DL vs Lower Trims

The DL trim is a significant step up from the base 'Single Cab' or entry-level 'Work' variants, adding essential creature comforts that make it viable as a daily driver. Unlike the lower specifications that often feature manual transmissions and basic vinyl interiors, the DL includes a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox paired with a more refined cabin finish. You get the benefit of upgraded upholstery and a more comprehensive dashboard layout that includes better integration for media and connectivity. Crucially for the GCC, the DL trim often features improved air conditioning components and interior insulation compared to the bare-bones fleet versions. It also includes the full Five-seater Double Cab configuration with four doors, ensuring that rear passengers have dedicated access and comfortable legroom that isn't available in the Extra Cab or Single Cab trims. This trim is specifically designed for the owner-operator who needs a truck for work during the week but wants a respectable vehicle for the family on the weekends.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

When compared to segment rivals like the Nissan Navara or the Isuzu D-Max, the Hilux's 2.8L diesel engine offers a broader torque curve that is particularly noticeable when climbing dunes or overtaking on the E11 highway. While the Navara might offer a slightly softer coil-spring rear suspension, the Hilux's leaf-spring setup is vastly superior for heavy loading and long-term durability on unpaved desert tracks. Its fuel tank capacity and fuel grade tolerance are optimized for regional diesel quality, ensuring fewer trips to the pump during long-distance drives across the borders. Toyota's cooling system is also widely regarded as the most robust in the segment, capable of maintaining engine and cabin temperatures even when the ambient heat exceeds 50°C. In terms of cabin ergonomics, the Hilux provides more intuitive physical controls that are easy to operate even while wearing work gloves, a small detail that makes a big difference in utility. Ultimately, the choice of a Hilux over its rivals is driven by the unparalleled density of Toyota service centers from Al Ruwais to Muscat.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.8L diesel engine is the gold standard for running costs in the GCC pickup market, delivering impressive fuel economy for a 4WD vehicle of this size, especially during steady-speed highway cruising. You can expect very predictable maintenance costs, as the 4-cylinder diesel is a non-complex engine with parts available at almost any reputable garage in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, or Kuwait. Toyota's official service intervals are well-spaced, and authorized centers like Al-Futtaim provide some of the best customer support in the region. In terms of resale, the Hilux experiences the lowest annual depreciation in its class, often retaining up to 70% of its value even after five years of use. This makes it a significantly safer financial investment than its American or European counterparts, which tend to lose value much faster in the local market. This specific Blue DL model, given its spec and mileage, is positioned at the 'sweet spot' of the used market where value remains extremely stable. Owners can drive this vehicle for another two years and expect to sell it quickly and at a price very close to their initial purchase point.

Performance & Capability

The heart of this Hilux is the 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which provides the low-end grunt necessary for heavy towing and effective off-roading. With the Four Wheel Drive system engaged in 4-Low, the truck becomes a formidable desert explorer, capable of navigating soft sand and rocky wadis with ease thanks to its generous ground clearance. The 6-speed automatic transmission is tuned to hold gears longer when under load, ensuring you always have power on tap for sand-dune ascents. Its towing capacity is among the best in the mid-size pickup segment, allowing for the transport of trailers, boats, or equipment without straining the drivetrain. On the highway, the truck remains surprisingly composed, with a top speed and overtaking capability that makes long-distance travel across the GCC's expansive road network a relaxed affair. The inclusion of electronic drive-mode selectors allows the driver to switch between 'Eco' for city fuel saving and 'Power' for maximum responsiveness. Whether you are using it for a weekend camping trip in the Liwa Desert or as a robust work vehicle, the performance is consistent and dependable.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the Hilux DL defies the traditional 'work truck' stereotype by offering a cabin that feels more like a modern SUV. The five-seat configuration is spacious enough for five adults, with sufficient headroom and shoulder room to ensure comfort during long drives between cities. The air conditioning system is legendary for its cooling speed, a vital feature for surviving the intense GCC summers, and it includes dedicated vents to ensure the rear passengers stay just as cool as those in the front. The Blue exterior is complemented by a dark, durable interior fabric that is resistant to stains and easy to clean after a day at the beach or the desert. Technology-wise, the cabin features a clear instrument cluster and an accessible media interface that covers all the daily essentials for modern driving. Cabin insulation has been improved in this generation to minimize the clatter of the diesel engine, providing a much quieter ride on the highway than previous iterations. Storage is plentiful, with various pockets and a large glovebox to keep your personal items secure and out of the sun.

Safety

Safety is a standout secondary benefit of the Hilux, which carries a 5-Star NCAP rating, providing peace of mind for both families and commercial users. It is equipped with a suite of airbags and a reinforced cabin structure designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision on high-speed roads. Active safety features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are standard, ensuring the truck remains stable even during emergency stops on gravel or sandy surfaces. Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) are particularly useful on wet roundabouts or during sandstorms where grip can be unpredictable. The high seating position offers excellent outward visibility, which is a key safety advantage when navigating busy multi-lane highways in Dubai or Riyadh. Unlike many entry-level pickups that skip on safety tech, the DL trim ensures that the driver has the necessary electronic assists to handle the vehicle's size with confidence. This commitment to safety makes it a top choice for those who prioritize the well-being of their passengers above all else.

The bottom line

This 2017 Toyota Hilux DL is the ideal choice for a GCC buyer who needs the ultimate 'do-everything' vehicle with the lowest possible risk of depreciation. It is a rare find in this condition and color, offering a perfect mix of diesel efficiency and Toyota's legendary reliability in a market that rewards both.
