Toyota Land Cruiser GXR

Highlights

• Low-range transfer case with locking differentials
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This Land Cruiser represents the most practical entry into the legend, pairing the reliable 4.0L V6 with the highly sought-after GXR trim. Having averaged roughly 19,000 km per year, this white-exterior example sits slightly below the typical GCC annual mileage, ensuring it remains a highly liquid asset in a market that prizes this specific color and spec. It strikes a precise balance for family life, offering eight seats and robust cooling systems that outperform almost anything in its class during the peak summer months. For a buyer prioritizing mechanical longevity and minimal depreciation over complex electronics, this is the region’s definitive workhorse.

This Car vs Other 2018 Land Cruisers

With 116,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven less than the 20,000–25,000 km annual average typical for large SUVs in the GCC. The white exterior is the most popular choice in the local market, offering the best heat reflection and the highest resale liquidity. While many 2018 models have been heavily modified or used for dune bashing, this GXR retains its original regional configuration, making it a safer long-term investment.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim provides a significant step up from the base EXR, most notably adding essential tech like a rear-view camera, parking sensors, and a more refined cabin with a wood-grain steering wheel. It also features a built-in refrigerator in the center console and dual-zone climate control with dedicated rear vents, which are critical for passenger comfort in the desert climate. These additions make the GXR much easier to resell in the UAE and Saudi markets compared to the entry-level variants.

Land Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Nissan Patrol, the Land Cruiser holds a clear edge in long-term value retention and parts availability in remote areas of the GCC. While rivals may offer more screen real estate, the Land Cruiser leads with a massive 138-liter dual fuel tank system that provides superior range for long-distance desert crossings or highway trips between Dubai and Riyadh. The body-on-frame construction and simpler V6 powertrain offer a durability profile that monocoque competitors cannot match.

Running Costs & Resale

Fuel consumption for the 4.0L V6 typically averages around 13.4 L/100km, which is efficient for a full-size SUV in GCC stop-start traffic. Toyota's authorized service network is the most extensive in the region, with major centers in every major city from Muscat to Kuwait City. The Land Cruiser consistently tracks at the top of its segment for resale, often retaining over 65% of its value after five years in the local market. Maintenance is straightforward, with standard 5,000 km and 10,000 km service intervals that are relatively affordable compared to European luxury rivals.

Performance & Capability

The 271 hp V6 engine is paired with a legendary 4WD system featuring a low-range transfer case and a center differential lock, allowing it to tackle deep sand and steep dunes with ease. On the highway, the 385 Nm of torque provides steady cruising power and sufficient overtaking ability for heavy family loads. With 230 mm of ground clearance, it is purpose-built for the diverse terrains of the Arabian Peninsula, from the rocky wadis of Hatta to the soft sands of the Liwa desert.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is configured for eight passengers, featuring a versatile three-row layout that is ideal for large families. The powerful Toyota AC system is designed specifically for extreme temperatures, ensuring the entire cabin reaches comfortable levels quickly even after being parked in the sun. Practical features like the cooled center console box keep beverages chilled during long summer drives, while the acoustic glass helps minimize wind and road noise on the highway.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to ensure stability on loose surfaces. The inclusion of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) provides essential support when navigating sand or gravel. This trim also benefits from parking sensors and a rear-view camera, which are vital for maneuvering a vehicle of this size in tight urban spaces.

The bottom line

This is a reliable, GCC-spec V6 Land Cruiser in the region's favorite color, offering a low-depreciation entry into one of the world's most capable family SUVs.
