Toyota Fortuner STANDARD D

Highlights

• 225 mm ground clearance
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• 80-litre fuel tank capacity

Summary

This 6-year-old Toyota Fortuner is a standout choice for buyers who prioritize mechanical longevity and low running costs in the GCC. Powered by the efficient 2.4-litre diesel engine, it avoids the higher fuel consumption of its V6 petrol counterparts while maintaining the heavy-duty 4WD capability required for regional weekend adventures. The white exterior is the most sought-after color in the local market, ensuring it stays cooler in the summer and retains its resale value better than darker shades. As a GCC-spec model with a full seven-seat layout, it provides a reliable, high-clearance family solution that is equally at home on long inter-city highways or navigating rougher terrain.

This Car vs Other 2020 Fortuners

At 123,000 km, this vehicle sits within the typical mileage range for a 6-year-old family SUV in the GCC, where annual averages often reach 25,000 km. The 2.4-litre diesel powertrain is a strategic alternative to the common 2.7-litre petrol, offering superior torque for highway overtaking and better long-range efficiency. Its white exterior is a primary advantage for local resale, as it is the most requested color in the UAE and Saudi Arabian used markets.

STD D vs Lower Trims

The STD D trim serves as the entry point for the diesel range, specifically adding the high-torque 2.4L turbocharged engine over the base petrol models. While focused on utility, it retains essential GCC comforts including rear air conditioning vents for all three rows and a robust 4WD system with a selectable transfer case. It prioritizes durability with hard-wearing interior materials designed to withstand the heat and sand of regional use.

Fortuner vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Mitsubishi Montero Sport and the Isuzu MU-X, the Fortuner leads with the most extensive spare parts availability and service support across every GCC country. Its body-on-frame construction, derived from the Hilux, provides a more rugged foundation for desert driving than monocoque rivals. The 80-litre fuel tank is specifically optimized for the long-distance highway stretches common between major regional hubs.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel economy for the 2.4L diesel typically averages between 10-12 km/L, offering a significant range advantage over petrol variants in stop-start city traffic. Toyota maintains the highest value retention rate in the GCC SUV segment, with the Fortuner historically losing only 8-10% of its value annually. Authorized service centers are available in almost every major city across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, with standard service intervals every 10,000 km.

Performance & Capability

The 225 mm ground clearance allows this SUV to clear terrain and high speed breakers that would challenge standard crossovers. The 400 Nm of torque from the diesel engine provides consistent pulling power, making it highly capable for full-occupancy trips or light towing. Its Four-Wheel Drive system includes a dedicated low-range mode, ensuring reliable traction for weekend excursions into the dunes or gravel wadis.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is configured with seven seats, featuring a flexible third row that folds to the sides to expand cargo space to over 700 litres when not in use. A high-output air conditioning system with dedicated vents for the second and third rows is standard, ensuring passenger comfort during the peak GCC summer. The elevated seating position provides excellent visibility, which is a major benefit when navigating fast-moving multi-lane highway traffic.

Safety

This Fortuner comes equipped with essential safety systems including Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to maintain composure on sand or slippery surfaces. It features dual front airbags and a driver’s knee airbag as standard. The inclusion of ISOFIX child seat anchors and rear parking sensors makes it a practical and secure choice for family logistics.

The bottom line

This Fortuner is the ideal match for a practical GCC buyer seeking a durable, diesel-powered 7-seater that offers the region's best resale security and off-road readiness.
