Summary

This 2022 Toyota Fortuner GXR is a definitive choice for GCC buyers seeking a balance of urban practicality and weekend adventure. Equipped with the more desirable 4.0L V6 engine, it offers a significant power advantage over the base 2.7L models, making it much better suited for highway overtaking and desert driving. Its white exterior remains the most sought-after color in the regional used market, ensuring maximum heat reflection and strong resale liquidity. While the mileage reflects active use, Toyota’s legendary body-on-frame durability means this SUV is just entering its prime for long-term ownership in the Gulf.

This Car vs Other 2022 Fortuners

With approximately 108,000 km, this Fortuner sits slightly above the typical 20,000–25,000 km annual GCC average, yet its mechanical condition is backed by Toyota's reputation for high-mileage reliability. Unlike many entry-level 2.7L units found in the market, this GXR features the V6 powertrain which is highly preferred for regional resale. The white exterior further enhances its value, as it is the highest-demand color for managing the extreme summer heat in the UAE.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim provides a substantial mechanical upgrade over the base EXR by swapping the 4-cylinder engine for the 235 hp V6. Inside, you benefit from enhanced comfort features such as a larger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dual-zone automatic climate control with dedicated rear cooling. It also includes 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps as standard, providing a more commanding presence and easier cabin access compared to the entry-level configurations.

Fortuner vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Mitsubishi Montero Sport and Nissan Pathfinder, the Fortuner stands out for its genuine truck-based body-on-frame construction, offering superior durability for off-road use. Its 80-liter fuel tank is specifically designed for long-distance desert crossings and cross-emirate commutes. While rivals may focus on soft-road comfort, the Fortuner leads the segment in part-time 4WD capability and remains the regional benchmark for low depreciation and parts availability.

Running Costs & Resale

The 4.0L V6 engine delivers a manufacturer-estimated 9.6 km/L, which is efficient for a large 4x4 using Super 98 or Special 95 fuel. Maintenance is highly predictable with 10,000 km service intervals supported by the most extensive authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Historically, the Fortuner V6 retains its value exceptionally well, typically depreciating only 8–10% annually, making it one of the safest financial investments in the used SUV market.

Performance & Capability

The 4.0L V6 produces 376 Nm of torque, providing the low-end grunt needed for navigating deep sand or towing heavy loads. Its part-time 4WD system includes a dedicated low-range transfer case, allowing drivers to switch between 2WD for city fuel efficiency and 4WD for challenging terrains. With a 279 mm ground clearance, it easily clears obstacles that would stop most unibody crossovers, making it a true dual-purpose vehicle for the GCC.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for large families, featuring seven seats with a versatile folding third row to accommodate extra cargo. Essential for the GCC climate, the powerful dual-zone air conditioning system features ceiling-mounted vents for both the second and third rows to ensure all passengers remain cool during the summer. Standard interior highlights include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a cooled glovebox for beverages, and a rearview camera for effortless parking in tight urban spaces.

Safety

This Fortuner GXR is equipped with a comprehensive safety suite including Dual Front Airbags and a Driver Knee Airbag. Active safety is managed through Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) to maintain composure on steep dunes or slippery roads. Anti-lock Braking (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) comes standard, providing reliable stopping power during high-speed highway travel.

The bottom line

For the family that needs a bulletproof daily commuter during the week and a capable desert explorer on the weekend, this V6-powered Fortuner GXR is the most reliable investment in the GCC market.
