Summary

This 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4MATIC SUV offers a unique entry point into the ultra-luxury EV market, benefitting from a three-year depreciation curve that makes it significantly more accessible than a new model. As a European spec vehicle in the GCC, it often carries exclusive interior finishes and equipment packages not typically found in regional dealership stock, though it requires attention to local warranty compatibility. The Grey exterior is a highly resilient choice for the local market, holding its visual appeal and resale strength better than bolder hues. Compared to rivals like the BMW iX, the EQS stands out for its S-Class inspired cabin refinement and superior aerodynamics. For a GCC buyer, this is a refined long-distance cruiser that handles the heat of city traffic and highway runs between Emirates with absolute silence.

This Car vs Other 2023 EQS 450s

At three years old, this EQS has already cleared the steepest part of its depreciation cycle, offering a high-tech flagship experience for a fraction of its original MSRP. In the GCC market, where luxury EVs are rapidly gaining popularity, finding a 4MATIC variant in this versatile Grey provides a balanced resale advantage. While GCC-spec units are tuned for extreme desert heat, this European import offers a sophisticated equipment list that appeals to tech-focused buyers in the UAE and beyond.

4MATIC vs Lower Trims

Choosing the 4MATIC trim over the base 450+ adds a second electric motor for true all-wheel-drive capability, which is a major benefit for stability on sand-drifted highways or during rare rainy spells. While the 450+ is rear-wheel drive, this 4MATIC version distributes its 360 hp to all four wheels, significantly improving traction and cutting the 0-100 km/h time. This trim also standardizes the rear-axle steering, making this large SUV as maneuverable as a compact sedan in tight Dubai parking basements.

EQS 450 vs Segment Rivals

The EQS SUV competes directly with the BMW iX and the Audi Q8 e-tron, leading the group in sheer cabin opulence and aerodynamic efficiency. Its 108.4 kWh usable battery is larger than many in the segment, providing a consistent range advantage for long-distance drives between Riyadh and Jeddah. While rivals often lean into sporty handling, the Mercedes prioritizes a 'magic carpet' ride quality that is unmatched on the region's well-maintained highway networks.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world energy consumption typically hovers around 22 kWh/100km, which translates to massive savings over petrol-powered luxury SUVs in GCC stop-start traffic. As a European spec vehicle, it is important to note that the factory warranty may not be recognized by local UAE agencies, so buyers should look toward specialized independent EV service centers which are now well-established in major cities. While early depreciation for luxury EVs is higher than Japanese petrol SUVs, the EQS has proven to retain value better than many startup electric brands due to the strength of the Mercedes-Benz service network.

Performance & Capability

The dual-motor setup delivers a combined 800 Nm of torque, providing effortless highway overtaking even with five passengers on board. It reaches a top speed of 210 km/h, though its real strength is the standard Airmatic suspension that iron out road imperfections at cruising speeds. While not a desert basher, the dedicated Off-Road mode can raise the vehicle by 25 mm, providing extra confidence when navigating gravel tracks or unpaved stadium parking.

Comfort & Cabin

The five-seat layout offers expansive legroom and a massive 645-liter boot, perfect for family road trips across the GCC. Standard ventilated front seats are a necessity for the local summer, working alongside a powerful pre-entry climate control system that can be activated via smartphone to cool the cabin before you enter. The Burmester 3D Surround Sound system and heavy acoustic glass ensure the interior remains a silent sanctuary, even amidst the noise of fast-moving highway traffic.

Safety

The EQS comes equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite that is particularly effective on fast-moving GCC highways, including Active Blind Spot Assist and Distronic adaptive cruise control. Its 360-degree camera system is essential for navigating the SUV's large footprint in tight urban areas. Additionally, the PRE-SAFE Impulse Side system can actually move the driver or passenger away from a side impact just before it occurs, providing a level of passive protection that few segment rivals can match.

The bottom line

This is an ideal opportunity for a tech-forward executive or family looking for S-Class luxury in an EV format without the high cost of a brand-new showroom unit. It’s a sophisticated, high-spec import that offers immediate delivery and significant value retention at the three-year mark.
