Summary

The 2023 Toyota Highlander LE HEV offers a smart alternative to traditional V6 SUVs, combining a modern 2.4L engine with a hybrid system that excels in both dense city traffic and long highway stretches across the Emirates. In the GCC market, where large family vehicles often carry high running costs, this hybrid model stands out by significantly extending the range between fuel stops without sacrificing the seven-seat utility families require. The grey exterior is a neutral, high-demand choice that maintains strong resale appeal in local markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. For buyers prioritizing reliability and long-term value, this Highlander leverages Toyota's most expansive regional service network, ensuring peace of mind even for cross-border road trips. It represents a balanced investment for a family needing a dependable, high-efficiency cruiser for the long term.

This Car vs Other 2023 Highlanders

With average annual mileage in the GCC typically reaching 25,000 km, a 2023 model remains a fresh entry into the used market. This hybrid variant is particularly sought after compared to the standard petrol-only models for its superior fuel economy during the high-temperature summer months. The grey finish is a practical and resilient choice for the local climate, offering better heat management and higher resale demand than darker shades.

LE HEV vs Lower Trims

The LE HEV sits above the basic entry configurations, providing essential upgrades such as the Smart Key system and a power-adjustable driver's seat that GCC buyers expect in this segment. It features a dedicated 8-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration, offering a technology leap over the standard audio units found in base-spec fleet models. This trim also standardizes the All-Wheel Drive system, providing better stability on sand-swept highway surfaces.

Highlander vs Segment Rivals

The Highlander leads rivals like the Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9 primarily in fuel efficiency, where its hybrid system offers a significant advantage in urban stop-start traffic. While competitors often rely on larger V6 engines, the Highlander’s electrified powertrain provides smoother torque delivery for overtaking on fast-moving highways like the E11. Additionally, Toyota’s parts availability across the GCC is unmatched by any other brand in this class.

Running Costs & Resale

Fuel consumption is a standout feature, with the hybrid system achieving approximately 6.5 L/100km, a figure that remains impressive even under the heavy load of a GCC-spec air conditioning system. Toyota vehicles in the Middle East enjoy the slowest depreciation rates in the SUV category, typically losing only 8-10% in value annually compared to 15% for many European rivals. With authorized service centers available in every major city from Muscat to Kuwait City, maintenance is both convenient and affordable.

Performance & Capability

The 2.4L engine works in tandem with electric motors to produce a combined 265 hp, delivering consistent power for full-load family travel. The Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system provides traction exactly when needed, making it suitable for gravel tracks and weekend beach trips. It maintains a refined ride quality at highway speeds, with the hybrid system often operating in silent EV mode during low-speed maneuvers in residential areas.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is designed for family logistics, featuring seven seats and a tri-zone climate control system with dedicated rear vents to combat extreme summer heat. Acoustic glass and extensive soundproofing materials ensure a quiet cabin environment, even on long drives between emirates. The third row folds flat to expand the 453-litre boot, providing flexible cargo space for large grocery runs or vacation luggage.

Safety

The Highlander comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite, including Pre-Collision Systems and Lane Departure Alert which are vital for safety on high-speed regional roads. Adaptive Cruise Control helps reduce driver fatigue during long desert highway stretches, while the comprehensive seven-airbag system provides top-tier protection for all passengers. Stability and traction control systems are specifically tuned to handle the unique mix of asphalt and sand found on GCC roads.

The bottom line

For the GCC family seeking the ultimate balance of Toyota reliability and modern hybrid efficiency, this Highlander LE HEV is a high-value opportunity in a resilient resale color.
