The Freelander 8 is one of the most surprising and significant automotive revivals of 2026, returning a beloved nameplate not as a Land Rover model but as the flagship launch vehicle of an entirely new standalone premium brand, born from a joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and Chinese automotive giant Chery, with production centred at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover plant in Changshu, China. Rather than slotting back into the Land Rover lineup, Freelander has been relaunched as its own standalone premium brand sitting alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as part of JLR's wider House of Brands strategy, with design overseen by JLR's Gerry McGovern and engineering powered by Chery's advanced electric-first platforms. The Freelander 8 measures 5,118 mm in length, 2,050 mm wide, and 1,898 mm tall on a 3,040 mm wheelbase, making it substantially larger than the compact original Freelander and comparable in footprint to a full-size premium SUV, positioning the Freelander 8 price firmly in the premium SUV segment at an expected European entry point of between €45,000 and €55,000. The 800-volt electrical architecture supports fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended electric powertrains, with the range-extender variant using a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 105 kW acting purely as a generator for the electric drivetrain, backed by CATL ternary lithium batteries and DC fast-charging capability of up to 350 kW. Technology highlights include twin-chamber air suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, roof-mounted LiDAR, and Huawei's Qiankun ADS intelligent driving system, which can automatically adjust terrain modes by scanning the road surface ahead using its sensor suite, while intelligent terrain response, adaptive dampers, and three locking differentials ensure that off-road capability remains a core part of the Freelander 8's identity, honouring the heritage of a nameplate that earned its reputation across more than two decades of genuine all-terrain performance.
