How to Convert your Driving license to Dubai License

Dubai government made it possible for some countries to get a local driving license without having to undergo a driving test or driving school, all you have to do is to convert your license instead.
If you’re a citizen of the following countries and you carry its driver’s license then you’re eligible for an exchange.

Follow along with the requirements and the procedure written in easy steps.
Required Documents to Convert the License
- Passport original and copy
- A copy of your residency visa
- Current driving license original and copy
- Eye test certificate from a recognised optician.
- No objection letter from sponsor
Fees for Dubai License Exchange
- 360 AED license transfer fee
- 150 AED for the eye test
UPDATE – a few of the above documents are not necessarily required as of recent at least for UK drivers license conversion.
Required Documents for UK license holders
- Photocopy of your passport, UK driving license and Emirates ID.
- The originals of the above-mentioned documents.
Passport photographs are no longer required as the RTA will take it from the Emirates ID. The NOC is also not required.
The total cost for a UK conversion now costs AED 870 and the fee most likely applicable for all conversions no matter the country.

The Steps
Once you’re done with your eye test – which can be at any recognised optician in Dubai – gather your documents and visit any of Dubai Traffic Department with driver licensing service.
Fill up the form then submit the documents to RTA officer for their signature.
Take the signed documents to the cashier for payment of 360 AED.
Once payment is done you need to go back to the officer and submit your papers and payment receipt.
Have a seat and wait until your name is called to take a photograph, the license should be issued in few minutes.
Special Cases and Extra Requirements
Driver’s licenses issued in Canada require a letter from the Canadian consulate to verify the license is genuine.
The licenses issued from the following countries require translation from the respective country consulate: Canada, Greece, Japan, Poland, South Korea and Turkey.

Yes you can convert but first you have pass road driving test.first just open the file 230DHM aprx then they are issue your learning license also you received one message contain your road driving test appointment. if you successfully passed then you pay 315DHM and hand over your saudi license to UAE license authority. in two days you will received your license by e post.

What is the meaning of 20 lesson?
Usually taking a driving course in the UAE require you to attend 40 lessons or classes, but if you have a foreign driving license they cut that in half to 20 class instead of 40.

It’s not allowed to get a license different from your residency visa, the only exception is if your visa company [employer] have a branch in RAK then you make a letter to road authority asking an exception to do your driving tests in RAK

You don’t need to convert back, your profile in RTA is never deleted, consult the RTA to reissue your license using your Emirates ID.

I’m from Philippines and my driving license there is non-professional which means I can just drive private vehicle..I also have Saudi Arabia driving license but only photocopy remains in me since my previous company had to collect it when I left.
My question is, do I still need to take 40 classes? Do they honor this photocopy driving license from KSA to make my classes less.?

As long as you have a valid license from the Philippines then you can get 20 classes instead of 40.

In Dubai the international driving license allows you to drive in the country for a limited time only and you can NOT convert to UAE license. In case you have a Filipino driving license you MUST undergo local driving school training and take 20 classes but in case you don’t have a driving license from your home country it means you need to do 40 classes.

No, you’re not eligible for license conversion but you can do normal driving school and take 20 classes instead of 40.
What is the logic behind this? The citizens of specific countries can convert their licenses in to UAE license, but the previous residents who have the same respective licenses can not convert it. Be it a resident or citizen, the traffic rules and tests are same in every country. So how the license obtained in same manner can be classified and denied of conversion? Sounds funny?? ehh…whats the logic…

In Dubai, you cannot go directly to the road test if you didn’t attend at least 20 classes. For Abu Dhabi, I am not sure.

It means you can only convert Bahrain license if you’re Bahraini. Any other nationalities with Bahraini license will have to take UAE driving courses which are reduced from 40 class to 20 classes.

That is NOT true, you never pay 10,000 for the license unless if you keep failing. From one time getting the license will cost from 4,000 to 6,000 depending on the school. I got mine from Emirates Driving Institute and paid 5,600 Dirhams. With your Pakistani license, you will get 20 class instead of 40 class which will give you even more discount.

Hi Karthik, as mentioned above and as RTA told us, you must be Qatari national to convert your Qatari license. Meaning RTA only converts the license if you’re a citizen of that eligible country.
