A used EV can look immaculate, drive beautifully, and still leave one expensive question unanswered: how healthy is its battery?

The Motor Guild is giving UAE motorists a straightforward way to find out. Its Spark Sundays initiative brings AVILOO battery diagnostics to Dubai, with a test that takes around three minutes and produces an independently tested battery health certificate. Prices start at AED 200 during the launch promotion.

We visited on Sunday, 27 September, and watched the process on an Audi e-tron. Equipment connected, test completed, report produced, all within three minutes. The demonstration was refreshingly fuss-free. You certainly would need more time to finish your coffee.

This is the kind of transaction that should become the new normal when buying or selling an electric car.

What Is Spark Sundays?

Spark Sundays is The Motor Guild’s public showcase for AVILOO battery testing, aimed at EV owners, prospective buyers, car dealerships, and workshops. The Motor Guild is AVILOO Battery Diagnostics’ sole authorised distributor in the UAE.

The company also operates a network for GCC automotive professionals, connecting the industry through events, business services and more. With Spark Sundays, it is putting battery diagnostics directly in front of the people who need to understand them.

Hosting the initiative is EVLAB, described as the region’s first multi-brand EV store. Its selection stretches from children’s electric ride-ons and scooters to buggies and premium electric cars. That makes it a fitting place to explore electric mobility while your own car gets checked.

Spark Sundays: How Does The EV Battery Health Test Work?

Book a slot through the Spark Sundays registration page, then bring your car to EVLAB at the allotted time.

Personnel from The Motor Guild or EVLAB connect the AVILOO testing equipment to the vehicle’s diagnostics port. The flash test analyses battery data while the car remains stationary, so there is no test drive or lengthy discharge session involved.

Once completed, the results and certificate are sent by email. Visitors can also enjoy a complimentary coffee, speak to the team about the findings, or browse the vehicles on display. Our Audi e-tron demonstration showed how easily the process fits into a Sunday morning. 

Why Is An EV Battery Health Check Important?

Battery condition influences how much energy an EV can store and, consequently, how far it can travel between charges. Since the battery is the single most expensive component, accounting for between 30% and 50% of the total cost of the car, this test also matters when planning ownership and negotiating a used-car purchase.

Mileage and age only tell a part of that story. They cannot tell you exactly how an individual battery has aged. Charging habits, temperatures, and usage all play a role, which means two otherwise similar cars can produce drastically different results.

An EV battery health test helps in several situations:

• Before buying: Assess the battery before committing to the car purchase.
• Before selling: Give prospective buyers documented evidence of its condition, thereby upholding its value.
• During ownership: Investigate concerns about range or battery performance.
• Before a warranty expires: Record abnormalities for further assessment, subject to the manufacturer’s warranty terms.

AVILOO also explains that its diagnostics can identify anomalies that may not have triggered a fault code in the vehicle’s battery management system. A dashboard without warning lights is useful reassurance, but there is more information available beneath it.

What Does EV Battery State Of Health Mean?

State of Health, usually shortened to SoH, describes battery health relative to its condition when new. It expresses how much usable energy remains as a percentage of the original amount. For example, a battery with 60kWh of usable energy when new and 54kWh currently remaining would have a 90% SoH on that basis.

This differs from State of Charge, which is the percentage drivers see during everyday use. A battery can be charged to 100% while having less usable capacity than when it was new.

An SoH figure also needs context. It does not predict an exact real-world range or mean the battery has that percentage of its lifespan left. Speed, weather, air-conditioning use, and driving conditions still affect the distance between charging stops.

What Does The AVILOO Battery Certificate Show?

The AVILOO battery health certificate users receive after the 3-minute flash test makes the results easy to understand, with a headline SoH percentage, comparison graphics, and individual diagnostic checks.

That is why the individual checks deserve attention alongside the headline number. A red flag in the result calls for professional investigation and/or repairs.

Who Is AVILOO, And Which EVs Can It Test?

AVILOO is an Austrian battery diagnostics specialist offering manufacturer-independent testing for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

It has recognition from the Car Remarketing Association Europe (CARA) for the FLASH Test and TÜV certification for its more extensive PREMIUM Test. These are established diagnostic products with applications beyond a single car brand.

According to The Motor Guild, AVILOO’s coverage extends to more than 1,000 car models, with updates adding further support for newly launched models. The company says it can test most EVs available in the GCC, including multiple models from Tesla, Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, BYD, Exeed, and more.

There is a distinction between AVILOO’s two tests: the FLASH Test provides a rapid battery assessment in minutes, while the PREMIUM Test collects data during an extended discharge through driving, which might take a few days to complete. 

Can A Battery Health Certificate Help Your EV’s Resale Value?

A well-maintained EV is easier to make a case for when you can show evidence of a healthy battery. Without a report, a buyer may allow for the unknown by offering less or walking away. A recent certificate gives both parties something more useful to discuss than a dashboard range estimate and the seller’s assurances.

For owners, it can support an asking price by documenting battery condition. For buyers, it helps distinguish a well-preserved car from one that needs some attention. For dealers, it can bring greater consistency to purchasing high-quality stock, appraising trade-ins, and adds clarity while showcasing vehicles to customers.

The certificate cannot set the market price or prevent depreciation. Brand demand, new-car discounts, warranty coverage, and overall condition still matter. The certificate’s value is in reducing uncertainty about a major component.
