Geely Monjaro EM-i Launched In The UAE From AED 130,900

The Geely Monjaro EM-i is now on sale in the UAE, priced from AED 130,900. It’s a plug-in hybrid version of the Monjaro SUV, with up to 116 km of electric range, up to 330 hp in its all-wheel-drive form, and an 8-year battery and motor warranty. Geely’s UAE distributor, AGMC, has opened enquiries with a launch offer.

It’s the second Geely in the UAE to use the brand’s EM-i plug-in hybrid system, after the smaller Geely EX5 EM-i.

That puts the plug-in hybrid at about AED 7,000 more than the petrol Geely Monjaro, which starts from around AED 124,000.

Powertrain, Electric Range And Fuel Economy

Every Monjaro EM-i uses a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with 142 hp and 230 Nm, working with Geely’s 3-speed hybrid transmission (DHT). The versions differ by the number of electric motors.

The front-wheel-drive car has a single motor. In other markets, it makes 275 hp and 544 Nm and gets an 18.4 kWh battery. The all-wheel-drive car adds a second motor on the rear axle for up to 330 hp and 667 Nm, and it runs a larger 29.8 kWh battery. Geely quotes 0-100 km/h in 5.83 seconds for the AWD version, which is quick for a family SUV of this size.

On the WLTP test cycle, Geely quotes up to 116 km of electric range for the AWD car, so most daily commutes in Dubai or Abu Dhabi can be done without using any petrol. Total range is up to 922 km on WLTP. As with any plug-in hybrid, real figures depend on how often you charge and how hard the A/C works in summer.

Fuel economy depends on the battery. With a charged battery, Geely quotes a weighted 2.4 L/100km (41.7 km/l) on the WLTP cycle. With the battery low, it’s 5.4 L/100km (18.5 km/l) on the NEDC cycle. Either way, that’s a lot less than the petrol Monjaro’s 8.8 L/100km (11.4 km/l).

Design, Interior And Features

The Monjaro EM-i is 4,800 mm long with a 2,845 mm wheelbase, the same wheelbase as the petrol Monjaro, and it seats five. The boot holds 633 litres, or 2,183 litres with the rear seats folded. At the back there’s a full-width LED light bar.

Inside, Geely fits a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 25.6-inch augmented-reality head-up display. In other markets, the top versions add a 16-speaker sound system with speakers in the driver’s headrest, front seats with heating, ventilation and massage, and a front passenger seat that folds flat for long items.

Other highlights include a panoramic glass roof, wireless phone charging, reclining rear seats and 6.6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L), which lets you power a laptop or a camping kit straight from the car. AWD versions also get adaptive suspension and, in other markets, a Sand drive mode, which is a nice touch for weekend desert trips.

Geely UAE’s launch offer for the Monjaro EM-i includes:

• 6-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty
• 8-year or 200,000 km warranty on the battery, drive motor and motor controller
• 5 years of roadside assistance
• 1 year of free service
• Free window tinting
• Up to AED 2,000 in trade-in support

Terms and conditions apply. The vehicle warranty is slightly shorter than the 7 years or 250,000 km offered on the petrol Monjaro, but the 8-year battery cover matches most plug-in hybrid rivals.

AGMC, Geely’s UAE distributor, sells the Monjaro EM-i. Its showrooms are in Deira and on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, on Airport Road and in Musaffah in Abu Dhabi, and in Al Ain, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Monjaro EM-i vs The Petrol Monjaro

The petrol Monjaro uses a 2.0-litre turbo with 238 hp and 350 Nm in its launch spec, an 8-speed automatic and 4WD. The EM-i gives you more power in AWD form, a much lower fuel bill if you charge it regularly, and a front-wheel-drive option for buyers who don’t need all-wheel drive.

The petrol car still makes sense if you can’t charge at home or at work. Otherwise, the EM-i is the Monjaro we’d go for.

Rivals

The plug-in hybrid SUV class is getting crowded in the UAE, and most of the competition comes from China.
