BMW M550i to receive slight HP boost thanks to 8-series

With 456 horsepower available at one’s foot in the BMW M550i, you would have thought that would be enough, right? Apparently, it isn’t as the M550i is about to receive a boost thanks to the upcoming BMW 8-Series and M850i.

According to sources, BMW is planning to remove the current engine found in the M550i and replace it with the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 which will also go on to power the flagship two-door. In its current guise, the BMW M550i is no slouch as it boasts 456 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. The M850i engine is good for 523 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque.

If this report is telling the truth, the BMW M550i will receive a boost of 67 horses and 100 Nm of torque and would no doubt increase performance, speed the car up in a straight line and max out at a higher top speed. With the current motor installed and the newly designed xDrive traction system, the M550i rockets from 0-100 km/h in around four seconds.

It would bring it closer to the M5 with its 592 hp and 750 Nm of torque V8 allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.4 seconds.

Furthermore, sources indicate the change will take effect towards the end of the year and the BMW M550i won’t be the only model to receive the treatment. The new X5 will receive the powerful motor in X5 M50i trim, and both the next-generation and brand new X7 are also said to receive the engine eventually along with badges too.
