In response to the visionary directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has recently announced the Hessa Street Improvement Project. The contract for the development project is valued at AED 689 Million.

Project Objective

Covering a substantial stretch of 4.5 kilometres from the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road, the Hessa Street Improvement Project has set its sights on four important intersections: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. The main objective of the project is to double the number of lanes on Hessa Street, taking it from two to four in each direction, and to boost the street’s capacity by an impressive 100%. Bicycle & Pedestrian Track

The Hessa Street Improvement Project boasts several noteworthy features, including the introduction of a 13.5-kilometre cycling track. At the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road, a specialized 2-lane directional ramp will facilitate traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street Eastwards.

The project’s cycling track, measuring 2.5 meters in width, is designed to accommodate bicycles, and e-scooters to promote sustainable and healthier commuting alternatives. The unique design elements of the cycling track’s bridges over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road add aesthetic and functional value to the overall project. Further alongside the bicycle track is a 2-meter wide pedestrian track for easy access.

Project Reach

  • Discussion on the expected population growth in areas served by the project, projecting over 640,000 individuals by 2030.
  • With the doubling of Hessa Street’s capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour, the project aims to provide seamless connectivity to the growing population, fostering accessibility and convenience.

Expressing his views on the project, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlights the strategic importance of the Hessa Street Improvement Project in developing the city’s road network. His insights underscore how the project aligns with broader goals, reflecting a commitment to fostering growth and progress in Dubai’s infrastructure.

The Hessa Street Improvement Project will contribute significantly to the future development and growth of Dubai. Apart from easing traffic congestion, the project aims to create a sustainable and accessible infrastructure for the growing population and be future-ready.
