RTA’s New Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project In Dubai

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is constructing a new 1,650-meter tunnel on Al Khaleej Street as part of the extensive Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. This project aims to improve traffic flow and infrastructure in the rapidly growing area.

Project Details

The centrepiece of this development is the much-anticipated 1,650-meter tunnel on Al Khaleej Street. Designed with three lanes in each direction, it will provide a seamless flow of traffic between the Infinity Bridge and Deira, a historically congested zone. This tunnel boasts a remarkable capacity of handling up to 12,000 vehicles per hour, significantly alleviating traffic burdens in the area.

Other Project Benefits

The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project extends far beyond simply easing traffic congestion. Here’s a closer look at the wider impact it will create:

  • Residents and commuters can expect significant reductions in travel time. What once took 104 minutes is projected to shrink to a mere 16 minutes by 2030, translating to substantial time saved and increased productivity.
  • The project will unlock a new level of connectivity for residents of Abu Hail, Al Wuheida, and Al Mamzar. This improved accessibility will positively impact their daily commutes and overall ease of movement within the city.
  • The tunnel’s strategic location will provide a significant boost to major development projects in the area. Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and Mina Rashid will all benefit from the improved traffic flow and accessibility.

Part Of Al Shindagha Corridor

The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project is just one facet of Phase 4 within the larger Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. This comprehensive initiative encompasses several additional improvements designed to create a more efficient and user-friendly transportation network:

  • Cairo and Al Wuheida Streets Intersection Revamp: The current roundabout will be transformed into a signalized intersection, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing congestion.
  • Cairo Street Upgrade: This critical artery will undergo improvements to enhance its capacity and functionality.
  • Dubai Islands Bridge Ramp Connection: A dedicated ramp will be constructed to connect Dubai Islands directly to the new tunnel, creating a seamless flow of traffic to and from this developing area.
