Mercedes Benz G300 300 GD

Highlights

• Low-range transfer case with locking differentials
• 215 mm ground clearance
• 600 mm wading depth

Summary

This manual 300 GD represents the definitive era of the W460 generation, a period when the G-Wagon cemented its reputation as the world's most capable mechanical off-roader. For a 37-year-old vehicle, the 66,000 km odometer reading is exceptionally low by GCC standards, suggesting significant mechanical longevity remains in its robust 5-cylinder diesel engine. While the green exterior is a period-correct choice that appeals to global collectors, the primary draw for a local buyer is the manual transmission and mechanical differential setup, which is increasingly rare in a region dominated by later, more complex automatic models. This specific trim offers the pure, tactile driving experience that modern luxury SUVs have lost, making it a standout choice for enthusiasts who value mechanical honesty over electronic intervention. As a European-spec classic, it provides a unique historical profile for collectors across the Emirates and the wider GCC.

This Car vs Other 1989 G300s

With only 66,000 km, this G300 has covered roughly 1,700 km per year, which is far below the typical 20,000 km annual average seen in the GCC. While many G-Wagons from this era have been modified or heavily used for desert touring, this example's low mileage and European heritage suggest a well-preserved mechanical state. The Green exterior is a classic enthusiast color that holds stable value among collectors, contrasting with the more common white or silver G-Wagons of the 1980s.

300 GD vs Lower Trims

The 300 GD was the top-tier diesel offering of its time, providing a significant torque advantage over the 240 GD. It features the legendary OM617 5-cylinder engine, widely regarded as one of the most durable powerplants ever built, which is a major benefit in the high-heat environments of the GCC. Standard equipment on this trim typically included a more comprehensive gauges package and improved cabin insulation compared to the basic utility variants.

G300 vs Segment Rivals

Compared to contemporaries like the Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series or the Nissan Patrol Safari, the G300 offers a more sophisticated triple-locking differential system that remains a benchmark for traction. While Japanese rivals often lead in parts availability across the GCC, the G-Wagon offers a superior build quality and a distinct European prestige that retains value differently in the luxury enthusiast market. Its compact 2-door wheelbase provides a significantly tighter turning circle and better breakover angles than long-wheelbase rivals.

Running Costs & Resale

The naturally aspirated 3.0L diesel engine is known for its mechanical simplicity and ability to run on standard diesel grades found across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. While fuel consumption in city traffic is noticeable for a vintage 4x4, its highway efficiency remains respectable for long-distance emirate-to-emirate travel. Authorized Mercedes-Benz service centers are abundant in major GCC cities, though specialized classic car knowledge is recommended for periodic maintenance. Value retention for low-mileage W460 models is exceptionally strong, often appreciating as collectors seek out original, unmodified examples.

Performance & Capability

The 300 GD is engineered for technical mastery rather than raw speed, featuring a dedicated low-range transfer case and manual locking differentials that allow it to navigate soft sand and rocky wadis with ease. With 215 mm of ground clearance and a 600 mm wading depth, it is fully equipped for the diverse terrain found from Liwa to the Hajar Mountains. The manual 5-speed gearbox gives the driver total control over the 5-cylinder's torque, which is essential for maintaining momentum in deep dunes.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior features the classic 5-seat configuration with a focus on durability and visibility, offering a commanding view of the road or trail. The cabin cooling system in these European-spec models may require regular checking to ensure peak performance during peak GCC summer months, though the vertical glass helps minimize solar heat soak compared to modern sloping designs. The 2-door layout creates a cozy, focused environment for the driver while still offering genuine usability for passengers.

Safety

Safety in this 1989 model is anchored by its heavy-duty body-on-frame construction and a robust roll-over structure inherent to the G-Class design. While it predates modern ADAS systems, it features highly predictable handling and powerful hydraulic power steering that assists in maintaining control during off-road maneuvers. The mechanical nature of the braking and drivetrain systems provides a level of reliability that is highly valued by traditional 4x4 enthusiasts in the region.

The bottom line

For the GCC collector, this low-mileage 300 GD is a rare opportunity to own a preserved icon of off-road history that is as capable today as it was in 1989. It is the perfect acquisition for the enthusiast who demands a purely mechanical connection to the road and a vehicle that will stand out at any classic car gathering in the UAE.
