Summary

This 2004 Mercedes-Benz G500 represents a unique opportunity to own a 22-year-old icon that has maintained its prestige and capability in the GCC. With 245,000 km, this European-spec G-Wagon has covered mileage consistent with the region's long-distance driving habits while offering the legendary M113 V8 engine known for its bulletproof reliability in desert heat. The classic Grey exterior remains a stable resale choice for buyers who appreciate the timeless, boxy silhouette over more aggressive modern wraps. For a serious buyer in the UAE or wider Gulf, this model stands out by offering genuine analog 4x4 hardware that modern SUVs have largely replaced with electronics. The combination of luxury interior updates from the early 2000s facelift and legendary off-road prowess makes this a highly sought-after workhorse for both city presence and weekend expeditions.

This Car vs Other 2004 G500s

At 245,000 km, the mileage on this G-Wagon is entirely typical for a 22-year-old vehicle in the GCC, where annual averages often reach 25,000 km due to inter-emirate travel. European-spec models like this one are often sought after for their specific interior configurations and are well-supported by the UAE's vast network of specialized German automotive workshops. The Grey finish is a high-demand, neutral tone that resists the visible effects of desert dust and maintains stronger resale value compared to non-standard custom colors.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

As the primary V8 offering for the 2004 model year, the G500 adds significant power and prestige over the G320 or diesel variants found in other markets. This trim includes the COMAND infotainment system and the upgraded wood-and-leather steering wheel as standard, features that were high-cost options on lower-spec models. GCC buyers will particularly value the standard dual-zone automatic climate control and rear air vents, which were refined during this production era to better handle extreme ambient temperatures.

G500 vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the 2004 Lexus LX470 or Range Rover Vogue, the G500 leads with its uncompromising body-on-frame durability and a unique triple-locking differential system that remains a segment benchmark. While rivals opted for air suspension which can be costly to maintain in high heat, the G-Wagon's coil-spring setup offers superior long-term reliability for desert use. Its upright greenhouse also provides better visibility for technical off-roading than the more rounded silhouettes of contemporary competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

The 5.0L V8 is a robust power unit that typically requires major service every 20,000 km in the GCC, though annual oil changes are recommended to combat the effects of heat and humidity. Fuel consumption averages approximately 15.5 L/100km, a figure that remains competitive for a heavy, permanent 4WD vehicle of this era. Parts availability in the UAE is excellent, with a massive ecosystem of both genuine and high-quality OEM spares available in Sharjah and Dubai. As a 'Youngtimer' classic, the G500 enjoys one of the lowest depreciation rates in the region, often appreciating as collectors seek out well-maintained M113-powered examples.

Performance & Capability

The G500 is defined by its mechanical capability, featuring a low-range transfer case and three independently selectable locking differentials (front, center, and rear) for absolute traction in deep sand. The naturally aspirated V8 delivers 292 hp and 456 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h. With a maximum ground clearance of 210 mm and a class-leading 3,500 kg towing capacity, it is as capable of hauling heavy trailers as it is of crossing the Liwa dunes.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin seats five in a high-command position, featuring premium leather upholstery and genuine wood trim that defines the Mercedes-Benz luxury era. The 2004 facelift brought a more ergonomic dashboard and improved insulation, ensuring the interior remains a quiet sanctuary even during high-speed highway cruising. The air conditioning system is notably powerful, designed to cool the large cabin volume quickly, supported by rear passenger vents and heat-insulating glass.

Safety

Safety in this G500 is handled by a robust suite including Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and 4-ETS traction logic, which are vital for maintaining control on slippery or sandy surfaces. The vehicle is equipped with front and side-curtain airbags, along with Brake Assist (BAS) for emergency stops in fast-moving highway traffic. The heavy-duty steel ladder frame provides a level of passive occupant protection that remains superior to many modern unibody crossovers.

The bottom line

This G500 is the perfect match for an enthusiast looking for a mechanically pure G-Wagon that balances classic styling with enough modern luxury for daily use in the Emirates. Given the rising demand for well-kept W463 models, this V8 example offers a secure investment and a legendary driving experience.
