Summary

This 2016 Hyundai Sonata GL is a quintessential midsize sedan for the GCC, offering a perfect balance of reliability and cabin space. Despite its mileage, the Sonata is known for mechanical resilience in high-temperature environments, making it a dependable daily commuter for the UAE's long highways. The burgundy exterior provides a sophisticated look that stands out from the standard silver and white fleet, while still maintaining good resale appeal. As a GCC-spec model, it features an air conditioning system specifically tuned for the region's extreme summers. It remains a top choice for those seeking a value-driven workhorse that doesn't compromise on passenger comfort.

This Car vs Other 2016 Sonatas

With 215,895 km, this Sonata has seen higher-than-average usage compared to the typical 150,000 km expected for its age. However, in the GCC market, such mileage often indicates a history of highway-heavy driving between emirates, which is generally easier on the powertrain than stop-start city traffic. The Burgundy paint is a premium choice that offers a distinctive alternative to more common colors while retaining strong demand in the used market.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim serves as a significant step up from the base 'Standard' models, offering essential comforts such as steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. Crucially for the region, the GL often includes rear AC vents and improved interior upholstery compared to entry-level fleet versions, providing a much better experience for rear passengers during the summer months.

Sonata vs Segment Rivals

The Sonata leads rivals like the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima in terms of interior passenger volume, offering one of the most generous rear-legroom figures in its class. Its 70-litre fuel tank is highly competitive, allowing for fewer stops on long-distance treks from Dubai to Muscat or Riyadh. Additionally, Hyundai’s generous availability of affordable spare parts across the GCC gives it a lower long-term maintenance ceiling than many European alternatives.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.4L engine averages around 8.0L/100km on the highway, making it an efficient choice for long-distance commuting. Hyundai enjoys one of the most robust service networks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with authorized centers in almost every major city. While the Sonata depreciates faster than a Toyota, its value retention at this age remains stable due to its high demand as a reliable secondary family car or high-mileage commuter.

Performance & Capability

The 2.4L MPI engine produces 176 hp and 229 Nm of torque, providing smooth and predictable power delivery ideal for urban navigation and highway overtaking. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it focuses on refinement and fuel efficiency rather than aggressive acceleration. The suspension is specifically tuned to handle the speed humps and varied road textures found across GCC residential areas with ease.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for long-distance endurance, featuring supportive seating for four adults and a high-output air conditioning system capable of cooling the interior quickly after being parked in direct sun. The 462-litre boot provides ample space for grocery runs or airport luggage. Soft-touch materials on the dashboard and a quiet cabin insulation package ensure a relaxed environment even during high-speed highway cruising.

Safety

Safety features on the GL trim include a driver-side airbag, anti-lock braking system (ABS), and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) as standard. The 2016 model was engineered with high-strength steel to improve structural rigidity, a factor that contributed to its strong safety ratings globally. These features provide essential peace of mind when navigating the fast-moving multi-lane highways of the GCC.

The bottom line

This Sonata is the ideal opportunity for a budget-conscious buyer who needs a proven, GCC-spec sedan with enough space for the family and the cooling power to handle the heat.
