The Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet is that rare thing: a prestige four-seat convertible. It’s a seriously tempting buy, too There are certainly newer rivals on the market, but the Benz continues to appeal with its tasteful styling and remarkably broad skill set.
Mercedes has worked hard to inject what it calls ‘luxurious sporty character’ into the E-Class Cabriolet. But while suspension lowered by 15mm and track width up 67mm at the front and 68mm at the rear (compared with the previous model) might hint at something sporting, this remains more boulevard cruiser than B-road blaster.
The E250 is actually the range sweet spot, offering the best blend of efficiency, dynamics and performance. The engine is impressively smooth and relaxing, and performance is very good. It’s smooth but feels effortless when cruising. The insulated fabric roof lends a classic feel to the Cabriolet while providing the theatre of opening or closing in just 20 seconds. The front end is imposing, without appearing aggressive.
Just as you’ll find in any other version of the E-Class, the Cabriolet has a level of interior quality that not many cars at any price can rival. The materials are dense, glossy and high-grade, with a wide range of textures and finishes to keep things interesting; and, combined with an exemplary standard of fit and finish, the feeling of sophistication is cranked up even further.
