Summary

This 2018 Ford Explorer offers a practical entry point into the large SUV segment, featuring a naturally aspirated V6 that provides the steady power required for GCC highway driving. Its white exterior is a top-tier choice for the region, effectively reflecting heat while maintaining the strongest possible resale value in the used market. With seating for seven, it stands out for its straightforward mechanical reliability compared to newer, more complex turbocharged rivals. For a GCC family, this vehicle represents a dependable workhorse that balances cabin space with a trusted 3.5-liter powertrain. The All-Wheel Drive system adds a vital layer of stability for weekend trips across gravel or sandy coastal paths.

This Car vs Other 2018 Explorers

With 125,000 km, this Explorer sits right at the average for a six-year-old vehicle in the GCC, where annual mileage often reaches 20,000 to 25,000 km due to inter-emirate travel. The white exterior is a significant advantage in the local market, as it is the most sought-after color for resale and heat management. It has been driven within typical parameters, suggesting a life of routine highway use rather than extreme duty.

BASE vs Lower Trims

As the foundational trim, the Base Explorer focuses on core utility but still includes the essential 4.2-inch color display and SYNC voice-activated system standard in the GCC. While higher trims add leather and sunroofs, the Base trim is preferred by many local buyers for its fabric seats that remain cooler during the peak summer months. It retains the same robust 3.5L V6 and AWD capability as the XLT, providing the same mechanical performance without the premium price tag.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer competes directly with the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, leading with a larger 70-liter fuel tank that is better suited for long-distance desert highway runs. Its 290 hp output is competitive for the class, offering more standard power than entry-level 4-cylinder rivals. The Ford’s wide body design also provides a more planted feel on the highway compared to narrower crossovers in this segment.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.5L V6 delivers a combined fuel consumption of approximately 12.4 L/100km, performing efficiently on the long, flat highways of the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Ford's extensive service network across the GCC ensures that authorized maintenance is easily accessible in every major city from Muscat to Riyadh. The Explorer maintains a stable depreciation curve in the region, typically losing 12-15% annually, which is standard for American SUVs with GCC specifications.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with 290 hp and 346 Nm of torque, this SUV handles highway overtaking with ease even when fully loaded with seven passengers. The 183 km/h top speed and 8.7-second sprint to 100 km/h demonstrate its capability as a confident road cruiser. The intelligent AWD system is particularly useful for managing sand patches blown across highways or navigating light off-road trails during weekend family outings.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for family logistics, featuring three rows of seating that can accommodate seven adults comfortably. A powerful dual-zone air conditioning system is a hallmark of the GCC-spec Explorer, ensuring the rear rows stay cool during 45°C summer days. With all seats up, the boot still provides 595 litres of space, making it a highly practical choice for school runs and shopping trips.

Safety

Safety is a priority with a 5-star overall rating, featuring a comprehensive suite of airbags including front, side, and curtain protection. Standard stability control and traction management systems are tuned for GCC road surfaces, providing extra grip during occasional rain or on sandy sections. The inclusion of a rear-view camera as standard equipment makes parking this large SUV in tight city spaces significantly safer.

The bottom line

This Explorer is an ideal match for a growing family seeking a reliable, GCC-spec 7-seater that is mechanically sound and holds its value well. It represents a smart buy for those who prioritize engine durability and cabin space over unnecessary luxury gadgets.
