Summary

This 2017 FJ Cruiser GXR is a prime example of Toyota's legendary off-roader, maintained to a high standard with a blue finish that remains popular for its retro appeal. At 9 years old with 137,000 km, its mileage is significantly below the typical GCC average for a vehicle of this type, making it a reliable choice for both urban commuting and desert adventures. The GXR trim offers the perfect balance of rugged hardware and modern comforts, ensuring it stands out against more road-biased crossovers. For the local buyer, the combination of a naturally aspirated V6 and body-on-frame durability is the ultimate insurance against the extreme GCC summer. With the model now discontinued in several markets, this well-preserved GCC-spec unit represents a secure investment with exceptional value retention.

This Car vs Other 2017 FJ Cruisers

With 137,000 km on the odometer, this FJ Cruiser has been driven approximately 15,000 km per year, which is notably lower than the 20,000–25,000 km annual average typical for SUVs in the UAE. This lower usage translates to better preserved mechanical components and interior surfaces compared to high-mileage desert veterans. The original blue exterior is a respected choice in the local market, maintaining a professional yet adventurous look that aids long-term resale stability.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim provides essential upgrades over the base EXR, most notably in its off-road recovery and convenience suite. This includes a factory-installed rear differential lock and an A-TRAC active traction control system that are critical for soft-sand performance. Inside, the GXR typically adds a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls and an upgraded sound system with a subwoofer, providing a more refined experience during long highway drives across the emirates.

FJ Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

When compared to rivals like the Jeep Wrangler or the Nissan Xterra, the FJ Cruiser leads on mechanical simplicity and bulletproof reliability in high-heat conditions. Its 4.0L V6 engine is renowned for its longevity, and the wide availability of parts across every corner of the GCC gives it a clear service advantage. While the Wrangler focuses on modularity, the FJ Cruiser offers superior cabin insulation and highway stability, making it the more comfortable choice for daily use in Dubai or Riyadh.

Running Costs & Resale

The FJ Cruiser is a standout performer in the GCC used market, with one of the lowest annual depreciation rates in its class at approximately 8–10%. Real-world fuel consumption typically averages around 12.5 L/100km on combined routes, though city traffic in summer heat can push this higher. Maintenance is highly predictable, with 10,000 km service intervals supported by an unmatched network of authorized centers and specialist garages across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

Performance & Capability

Under the hood, the 270 hp 4.0L V6 provides 380 Nm of torque, delivering the low-end grunt needed for climbing steep dunes or effortless highway overtaking. The 230 mm ground clearance and short overhangs allow it to navigate terrain that would stop most modern crossovers, while the automatic transmission is specifically tuned for durability under strain. For desert weekends, the selectable 4WD system and body-on-frame construction provide the structural integrity required for serious off-roading.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior features water-resistant fabric seats and easy-to-clean surfaces, designed with the local climate and outdoor lifestyle in mind. A powerful air conditioning system is a hallmark of this model, ensuring the cabin stays chilled even during the peak of July. Despite its rugged exterior, the cabin offers a high seating position for excellent visibility and a layout that focuses on tactile, easy-to-use controls that can be operated even while wearing gloves.

Safety

Standard safety features on this GXR include the Star Safety System with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. It is equipped with multiple airbags and high-mounted headrests to protect occupants during off-road impacts. The inclusion of rear parking sensors and a robust frame provides peace of mind in both congested city traffic and unpredictable desert environments.

The bottom line

For the enthusiast or family seeking a durable icon that defies depreciation, this low-mileage, GCC-spec GXR is an opportunity to own a legendary off-roader in its most refined form.
