• GMC Pro Safety suite standard

Summary

This 2020 GMC Terrain SLE represents a practical entry point into the premium crossover segment, offering a more refined cabin experience than its direct mass-market rivals. While its mileage reflects the typical high-frequency highway use common in the GCC, the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine is specifically engineered for efficiency during long-distance commutes between emirates. The brown exterior is a sophisticated, soil-masking choice that holds its professional appearance well against the regional dust. For a buyer seeking American comfort with Japanese-rivalled running costs, this GCC-spec Terrain is a balanced choice for city navigating and weekend road trips. Its standard safety tech and flat-folding seat versatility make it a standout for active families in the region.

This Car vs Other 2020 Terrains

With 179,000 km over 6 years, this vehicle has averaged approximately 30,000 km per year, which is slightly above the GCC average of 25,000 km but typical for professional commuters. The brown finish is a durable choice for the local climate, offering better heat and dust management than darker shades while maintaining a high resale appeal. Choosing a GCC-spec model ensures the cooling system and air conditioning are optimized for extreme summer temperatures, a critical factor for long-term reliability in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

SLE vs Lower Trims

The SLE trim serves as the essential upgrade over the base SL, adding high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with GMC's signature C-shape lighting for better nighttime visibility on unlit desert roads. It features a leather-wrapped steering wheel and premium cloth upholstery that stays cooler than leather in the summer heat. Most importantly, the SLE provides access to GMC's Traction Select System, allowing the driver to optimize front-wheel-drive performance for different road conditions.

Terrain vs Segment Rivals

The Terrain is frequently cross-shopped with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, where it leads in passenger legroom and offers a more 'Professional Grade' interior aesthetic. Its 1.5-litre turbo engine provides 275 Nm of torque at low RPMs, making it feel more responsive during highway overtaking than naturally aspirated competitors. The addition of standard acoustic-laminated glass makes it one of the quietest cabins in the compact SUV segment, a major benefit on high-speed GCC motorways.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel economy is impressive for its size, averaging 6.7 L/100km, which helps manage costs during long-distance travel. GMC maintains a strong authorized service network across the UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, with standard service intervals every 10,000 km. While American crossovers generally see slightly higher depreciation than Japanese rivals, the Terrain holds roughly 50-55% of its value after five years in the GCC, especially when maintained at official centers.

Performance & Capability

The 1.5-litre turbocharged engine delivers 170 horsepower, paired with a smooth 9-speed automatic transmission that is tuned for fuel-saving highway cruising. With 203 lb-ft of torque available from just 2,000 RPM, it handles fully loaded family trips with ease. While this Front Wheel Drive model is built for the road, its 200 mm of ground clearance is sufficient for navigating gravel tracks and sandy parking areas at local beaches or parks.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for versatility, featuring a segment-exclusive fold-flat front passenger seat that allows for items up to 8 feet long. Rear passengers benefit from dedicated air conditioning vents, a necessity for the GCC summer, and class-leading rear legroom of nearly 1,000 mm. The 7-inch infotainment system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless navigation and media integration for every journey.

Safety

Safety is a primary strength of the 2020 model, which comes standard with the GMC Pro Safety suite. This includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Alert—systems that provide essential peace of mind on fast-moving multi-lane highways. It also features a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, supported by a comprehensive six-airbag system and a high-strength steel safety cage.

The bottom line

Perfect for the value-conscious professional or small family, this Terrain offers premium GMC styling and advanced safety at a highly accessible price point for the local market.
