• 374 litres boot space (standard configuration)

Summary

This 2022 Hyundai Kona Smart Plus offers a practical entry into the compact SUV segment with an impressively low 33,000 km, well below the expected 80,000 km for a 4-year-old vehicle in the GCC. The Grey exterior is a highly resilient choice for the region, maintaining excellent resale demand and hiding desert dust better than darker tones. As a Smart Plus trim, it bridges the gap between basic utility and modern tech, featuring the reliable 2.0L engine that is widely supported by service centers across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. For a buyer looking for a fuel-efficient commuter that handles the heat with ease and offers better value retention than its European rivals, this American-spec Kona is a standout opportunity.

This Car vs Other 2022 Hyundai Konas

With just 33,000 km on the odometer, this Kona has been driven roughly 8,250 km per year, which is significantly lower than the GCC average of 20,000 km for cars of this age. This lower-than-average usage translates to less mechanical wear on the cooling system and suspension, two components that face extreme stress during Gulf summers. The Grey finish is one of the top three resale colors in the local market, ensuring this car remains a liquid asset compared to brighter, niche alternatives.

SMART PLUS vs Lower Trims

The Smart Plus trim adds essential convenience features over the base SE and SEL models, including keyless entry with push-button start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. GCC buyers will particularly appreciate the upgraded infotainment screen with integrated smartphone connectivity, providing a more modern cabin experience during long commutes. It also includes 17-inch alloy wheels and roof rails as standard, giving it a more premium stance and extra utility for weekend road trips.

Kona vs Segment Rivals

The Kona leads rivals like the Nissan Kicks and Kia Seltos by offering a more agile driving experience and a 2.0L engine that feels less strained on fast-moving highways like the E11. While the Seltos offers more boxy cargo room, the Kona prioritizes aerodynamics and efficiency, achieving a superior 6.2 L/100km combined rating. Its footprint makes it far easier to park in congested urban areas like Dubai Marina or Riyadh's city center.

Running Costs & Resale

Fuel costs remain low with a real-world combined consumption of approximately 6.2 L/100km, and the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine is compatible with widely available 91-octane petrol. Hyundai has one of the most extensive authorized service networks in the GCC, including Juma Al Majid in the UAE and Wallan in Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts are affordable and easy to source. The Kona typically retains about 60% of its value after three years in the GCC market, outperforming several American and European competitors in the same class.

Performance & Capability

The 149 hp 2.0L engine provides steady power for city navigation and a verified top speed of 194 km/h, ensuring it can keep pace comfortably on high-speed desert highways. The Front Wheel Drive layout paired with a 170 mm ground clearance makes it capable of handling gravel tracks and sandy parking areas at the beach, though it is primarily designed for paved efficiency. Selectable drive modes allow you to sharpen the throttle response for quicker overtaking when merged into fast-moving traffic.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to insulate passengers from the harsh GCC climate, featuring a powerful air conditioning system that is a hallmark of the brand's local reputation. The 5-seat configuration provides 374 litres of boot space, which expands to over 1,100 litres with the rear seats folded for large grocery runs or IKEA trips. Durable fabric upholstery is used to stay cooler in the direct summer sun compared to dark leather options, making it a pragmatic choice for the region.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on this trim includes a comprehensive airbag suite and a 5-star safety rating, providing peace of mind for family use. It features active systems such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, which are particularly valuable for maintaining safety on long, monotonous desert highway stretches. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts come as standard upgrades on the Smart Plus, assisting in the high-density traffic common in major GCC cities.

The bottom line

This low-mileage Kona Smart Plus is the ideal choice for a young professional or small family seeking a reliable, high-tech crossover that is affordable to run and easy to resell in the GCC market.
